Shortly after the MSRA testing window has closed, your MSRA result will be available within your Oriel account against your application shortlist scores. For the January 2024 exam, results are expected by 9 February 2024. How is the MSRA scored? The Professional Dilemmas section is limited to 95 minutes and is a ranking test, consisting of 50 scenarios. For each situation presented, the candidate will have to rate the appropriateness of 4-5 independent actions (from 1=most to 5=least appropriate).

The second section is clinical problem solving and measures the applicant’s ability to apply their knowledge and make clinical decisions. This is again based on foundation doctor level competency and covers 12 topic areas related to general medicine. There are only a small number of ophthalmology questions, and therefore revision must be broad to cover other speciality areas. The questions are clinical scenarios which require you to use judgement and problem-solving skills to diagnose and manage conditions. It comprises of 97 questions, of which 86 count towards the overall mark and 11 are pilot questions. You are allocated 75 minutes to complete this section. The MSRA application for 2023 opened at 10am on 25th July 2023 and closed on 15th August 2023 at 4pm. Another very common question that I get asked is ‘which question bank should I use?’ I have not had experience of all banks on the market but all I would say is try and have some variety. Often doctors rely on only one question bank and get very used to a certain style of question-writing – doing the same style of question 2-3000 times is bound to trigger your brain to think in a certain way and it can be very confusing when another ‘style’ is suddenly encountered in the exam.The Professional Dilemmas Paper is separated into the following two parts, with around half of the 50 scenarios for each question type: Part 1 – Ranking
While your previous studies and work as a junior doctor will have prepared you for some of the questions and scenarios within the MSRA, it’s advisable to allow adequate revision time for the MSRA, as you would with any other exam. EMQs require the candidate to select the most appropriate answer(s) from a list of options for a given scenario. Each EMQ typically includes a stem and a number of related options. The stem may describe a clinical scenario, a diagnostic test result, or a piece of clinical data. The options may include different diagnoses, management options, or further investigations. There is an optional five-minute break between the two papers. If candidates take a longer break, this extra time will be subtracted from the time available in which to complete the CPS paper. 2 The MSRA score is valid for one year, after which you will need to retake the exam if you wish to apply for a specialty that requires it.
