About this deal

Magicshine has updated this light over the original with the addition of software and hardware needed for the Bluetooth wireless remote control. Its throw is immense, and in flood mode it illuminates the sides of the trail and around corners, too, in a soft hue that’s easy on the eyes. The high IPX 7 waterproof rating means that it should be able to withstand the worst of winter weather.

In testing, we’ve found the PWR system to be totally fuss-free. The battery life is also pretty good for a mid-powered light. The Magicshine Ray 2600B Smart Remote Bike Light is powerful, with auto-dimming tech and a dual-beam pattern forming a great light for night riding at a competitive price. With 350 lumens, it puts out an enormous amount of light. The payoff for this is a short run time in static mode, lasting only a few hours.Pros: High beam quality for urban and rural use; andy battery indicator in hours; c ompetitively priced It's still very bright though: bright enough for riding at any speed on dark lanes. The quality of the beam is good and the DRL strip gives a bit of close illumination to augment the longer throw of the CREE LEDs. Magicshine says it's 'ideal for both road and mountain,' but in reality it's probably a better off-road beam than a road one. In 2,700-lumen Reflex++ mode, run time is a generous three hours. The aluminium unit is IP65-rated and has a two-year warranty; the LEDs are guaranteed for life. Despite the head unit’s diminutive size, the beam’s gentle green hue is well-balanced between spot and flood, giving a long throw down the trail. Magicshine says the light has a 20-lumen maximum output. In reality, it feels brighter and there’s a variety of modes to help you stay seen.

The filament bulb is thankfully a thing of the past. Virtually all of today’s high-end front lights have Cree LEDs, which offer better brightness, more versatility, less heat, longer life and are smaller. These two measures of light are related. Lumens is the total light emitted by your bike light. Lux is the brightness divided by the area it covers. The Ravemen PR2400 bicycle light is a solid performer for all-around trail riding. Ian Linton / Immediate Media Cateye’s Volt 6000 is a technological marvel, squeezing 6000 lumens out of a single, powerful LED. The light is crazy bright with a wide beam that easily encompasses everything in front of you, but to me the most exotic feature is the built-in cooling fan. On hot summer nights, many of the lights in this test easily get hot enough to burn skin if left on high while just standing around. The Volt 6000 remained at a reasonable temperature through it all. The Moon Meteor Storm Pro feels more powerful than its claimed output but the light it projects is especially focussed. Simon BromleyThe TraceR’s bulb capitalises on all its 75-lumen max output by casting the beam 180 degrees to ensure road users see you. The Seca Enduro with 6-cell battery from Light & Motion boasts long run times on max power. Georgina Hinton The Light & Motion Seca Comp 2000 is a great choice for casual night rides. Ian Linton / Immediate Media Beam pattern refers to how the lights disperse light across the trail, and it can be just as important as lumens when it comes to how well you can see.
