The mystery at the center of Amongst Our Weapons, your latest urban fantasy novel, begins with a murder at the London Silver Vaults. Peter Grant, the hero of the series and a police detective specializing in investigating paranormal crimes, is called to the scene along with his counterpart, Sahra Guleed, and his boss, Thomas Nightingale (Peter also brings with him his trainee/apprentice, Danni, whom he and Nightingale have recently recruited). Aaronovitch showcases a superlative blend of whimsy and grit in the eighth Rivers of London urban fantasy.... Jim Butcher meets Douglas Adams in this winning series installment.”— Publishers Weekly (starred) Ben Aaronovitch has created a wonderful world full of mystery, magic and fantastic characters. By the standard of murders most gruesome, this was not particularly bad. I've seen headless, faceless, and dismembered bodies. Not to mention the one that was cooked from the inside out. And it's not that you get used to it, but you do feel a little wash of relief if the injury is small and neat and the corpse hasn't yet started to smell. But the pluses of the book were many. It was different to see Peter training someone, instead of being the newbie himself, and it highlights his growth and maturation. Nightingale is giving him more responsibilities, and Peter is also trying to be more adult now that he is going to be a dad. And just when I started thinking that Danni wasn’t very interesting, something amusing and intriguing was done with her. The Rivers of London series continues to shine as one of the best and most impressive urban fantasy series with Amongst our Weapons.”—The Unseen Library Water Weed – When Chelsea and Olympia decide to earn a few quid on the side, Peter and Bev find themselves confronting London's new queenpin of crime – the brutal and beautiful Hoodette! The plot was fairly complex and there were a lot of new characters which made it a bit difficult to follow. I had to listen a second time to really understand it. The robbery, says Phillip, was interrupted by a flash of blinding light. A moment later David Moore was lying on the floor, a huge hole carved out of his chest. Better than the alternative," I said, and we went and found the SOCO to make sure all the CCTV cameras and the rest were bagged and tagged.

The disappearing act, the reports of a blinding flash of light, and memory loss amongst the witnesses all make this a case for Detective Constable Peter Grant and the Special Assessment Unit. The most entertaining book that I have read in such a long time.... It’s very funny, it’s very clever, it’s very nicely written.... It’s such a treat.”—Nancy Pearl, bestselling author Chapman: [slightly irritatedly and with exaggeratedly clear accent] One of the cross beams has gone out askew on the treadle.Aaronovitch in particular has made great strides in taking what was predominantly a US phenomenon in the ‘80s and ‘90s, and not only bringing it bang-up-to-date, but also immersing it in a combination of British wit and culture which has turned out to thoroughly suit the genre. Detective Stories - Peter is trying to make Detective which is a bit complicated when your exam proctor is 90% sure you are crazy or a practical joke! Phillip Arnold was a third-generation silver trader. He was proud to inform us that his family had owned a shop in the London Silver Vaults for fifty years. Overall, this wasn’t the strongest entry in the Rivers of London series (mainly because of the pacing issues, for me), but it was still good. B. This can be dated by a reference in the opening chapter of the novel, where Peter starts a new job on same day that David Bowie died, i.e., 10 January 2016
