About this deal

The new Chronicles of Crime: 1900 standalone game challenges players not only to skillfully collect evidence and interrogate suspects but also to solve some escape-room-style puzzles incorporated into each scenario. Unpredictable characters, each with own side story which ties to the main story. Who is the decoy and who is the real criminal?

London, today. You just left the commissioner's office. You're not sure how you feel, but definitely not good. A body was found in Hyde Park, and the commissioner just made it your case. You leave the police station, get in your car, and close the door. You shake off your thoughts, start the engine, and drive away to the crime scene. Time to get to work. Moreover, 1400 is the earliest instalment of the Millenium Series, which also contains 1900 (where you play as a journalist on the hunt for scoops) and 2400 (in which Paris is a cyber-dystopia). The protagonists in each instalment all belong to the same family, and certain characters and elements pop up across the series, making it a very satisfying experience to play through them all. The living element of realism in Chronicles of Crime 1400 is incredibly immersive. Missing something during an initial investigation can lead to you running around trying to find it, or spending too long talking to a character, can mean another wanders off. There’s always constant pressure to solve a case, and you’re not left to just spend time showing every item to every character. Chronicles of Crime or 1400 As far as player count goes I think you could play it with a large group, but it works best with two or three players. Most of the action comes through an app so you have to pass the phone or device around. Only so many eyes can help look over the various clues and plot a course of action. Too many cooks and all that… Their answers may reveal new information, lead you to new locations, or make you aware of new characters.

Chronicles of Crime 1900 follows the same format as its predecessor. Using an app, you scan a combination of locations, witnesses/suspects, clues/evidence and puzzle cards. Playing The Game Using the same set of physical components (a board and cards representing locations, characters, and items), the Chronicles of Crime app lets you and your friends step into a world of mystery and play out your investigations. The tech works well and I had no problem with scanning unless under very bright lights. And while replay value of each case is low, there is a ton of content and due to the app it is easy to add further cases down the line.

I love the app on my phone as a tool. The QR code scanning is such an innovative piece to the game, plus all the additional scenarios you can buy.includes one tutorial case and four full-length cases of difficulties from Easy to Hard. They usually take 1-2 hours to complete, meaning that the game has about 6.5 hours of gameplay in it from start to finish. Loading up the app for the first time takes you into a simple tutorial case, but don’t be fooled; subsequent cases up the ante and subtlety significantly. Cases will involve you being called to a scene which you can generally examine using the app. This can be done with the separate VR Module attached to your phone, or just through the phone's display. If you are playing with friends you will be frantically be shouting out all the things you see as they rifle through the clue cards to find something that might relate. Chronicles of Crime 1400 is as good as the original, and it’s Paris setting is captured well. 1400 will be followed by 2 more standalone games, set in different timezones, but following the same family.

The box can hold this game and it’s currently available expansions (Welcome to Redview and Chronicles of Crime Noir). It is all neatly organized in the box, probably one of the best implementations I have seen to store a core game and it’s expansions in one place while keeping them separate. That being said, the scenarios are well designed and sometimes challenging. There are a lot of clues to be uncovered and some missions will keep gamers hunting for hours. If you are looking for something new and unique in the investigative genre, Chronicles of Crime is worth a look. None of this information is written on the cards themselves, but contained within the app. Players activate it by scanning a QR code on the relevant card. This works brilliantly. It allows the game to reuse the same character cards in different scenarios as all the relevant information to the current crime mystery is stored in the app. This expands the replayability of the game, relying on the addition of new digital content rather than players buying physical components. It is, of course, inevitable that expansions will add more cards or locations to the game. However, as there is plenty of physical content already, some new extra expansions could focus on digital content only, making it cheaper and more convenient to buy.Chronicles of Crime is an award-winning cooperative game of criminal investigation mixing a board game, an app and a touch of Virtual Reality. You and your team will be put on crime cases, moving all around town, interviewing suspects or witnesses, and searching for clues in 3D scenes! While there is a lot of scanning and reading of the app, the player interaction is critical. You want to be discussing where to go investigate next, whether a witness was trustworthy, the primary suspect and what that weird clue means. Having the key players and clues of the mystery laid out in front of you helps to piece the puzzle together immensely. You may not have the strings connecting the pins of the photographs, but you have the second-best visual after that. Zatu has an excellent range of games and for most of them the best prices too. Delivery is always fast and I have never received a game in bad condition. 10/10 would recommend.
