EXCEPT for the story where they kill a child and sow it’s ground up bones into the soil to provide a good harvest. I enjoyed that one.

Eso sí, es terror clásico similar al que podriamos encontrar en algún libro de Valdemar gótica y eso es sinonimo de calidad. I’ve finally made a start on making the hand-bound chapbook pledge reward. As the story I’m including (‘Witch In-Grain’ by R. Murray Gilchrist) is very short, I’ve decided to include a second story by the same author –‘The Basilisk’. I think they work nicely together, a couple of late 19th century tragic romances full of folkloric doom!

A rakish cad gets his just deserts when he’s bewitched by a mysterious young woman whilst out on a country stroll. One of the lighter (and shorter) tales in the anthology, with a fun sting… Loved the image of the witch turning into rabbit to escape when caught stealing potion supplies, and another of the witch themed stories where the horror comes from the mob that is trying to kill a child (sadly historically accurate) for supposed witchcraft.

Every story is accompanied with its own linocut by Richard Wells add something really special as well.

Damnable Tales - A Folk Horror Anthology - Unbound

Really more of a 3.5 stars. Some of these stories really rip, some are total duds. One is written in Scots so I couldn't even understand it. The Devil of the Marsh' by H.B Marriott-Watson, first published in the collection ‘Diogenes of London, and other Fantasies and Sketches’, 1893. And what a book it is: a considerable and considered selection, and delivered handsomely. When I heard it was being crowd-funded I was a bit wary of what the quality would be like, but there’s no complaint here. It is solidly constructed and well presented. The subtle touch of adding an earthy red to some of the chapter openings is just a little thing, but I found it nice attention to detail. And the illustrations are superb. Sharply printed, and the old woodcut style suits the material. There is a quirkiness and humour to some which suits folk horror tales really well, yet – even so – the image for Robert Louis Stevenson’s ‘Thrawn Janet’ is rather disturbing (and also my favourite illustration in the book). This anthology of Folk Horror Tales curated and illustrated by Richard Wells, has the most hauntingly beautiful imagery to accompany diverse and Damnable Tales about the horrors of the ages. Over all this book was a disappointment. I went in with such high expectations; I saw it on the shelf in Waterstones (yes brought new which makes it even more disappointing) and did a wee happy jiggy dance. I had never seen a Folk Horror anthology before, and especially one that was so beautifully illustrated. So therefore it had to be mine.
