The story focuses on Jayni, her mother and her brother as they try to escape her abusive father. The issue is handled with care by Wilson, but is (as always) realistic. There are many twists and turns throughout the story however one message is clear by the end: there is nothing more important than family. This is illustrated by the reunion of Jayni's mother and her aunt who Jayni hasn't seen since she was little. I love to share the Lola stories during storytime. The books are so sweet. The beginning of this story was neat because McQuinn referenced library storytime.Personally, I thought that for all her flaws, Nikki/Victoria was a sympathetic character. She, Jayni/Lola Rose, and Kenny/Kendall obviously love and care for each other and that makes you want the three of them to have a happy ending. As with The Illustrated Mum, Lola Rose is a book that still has the ability to pull at my heartstrings even though I’ve read it many times. Lucy's plan to chain Lola and pretend that she and Lana were split personalities would not actually work, since the librarian saw them together at the library. Daffy and Lola had their cars towed at night and the events at the DMV don't happen till the next day. The episode makes it clear, that neither Bugs, Lola, nor Daffy return home after their vehicles are towed. So, it is possible that they went home, off screen. This is a really sweet little "new baby" book. Lola helps her family get ready for her new brother, Leo, and once he's born, she helps her parents by reading to him as they all go through their day. There are lots of simple images of diaper changing, feeding, sleeping, bath time, nap time, etc.
