About this deal

Best book I have read so far. This book was written almost a hundred years ago but faithfully describes my childhood. I lived in a joint family where odds and ends were saved and were given to children to play/craft with instead of being thrown away. Just like the book, in any emergency at least one of the large family would have something stashed away which would prove to be useful. My parents are northern. And Roman Catholic. They came down south in the late 1960s to look for work. My dad, to the bafflement of his upper-working-class family, wanted to work in the theatre. Mum, a recently qualified doctor, went with him. For every mother who desires to cultivate a lasting foundation of curiosity and wonder for her children from home, whilst continuing a rich life of learning for herself. Brisley, Joyce Lankester (2011). Milly- Molly-Mandy's Friends. Pan Macmillan. ISBN 978-0-230-75497-3.

Another classic that I bypassed in childhood, but unlike some, it stands the test of time for an adult reader.

There is a recipe for lid potatoes and a technique to make sailor girls which I am planning to try. Most of the fun the children have is in playing outside or in assisting grown ups. Brisley, Joyce Lankester (1974). Milly-Molly-Mandy again. Internet Archive. Harmondsworth: Puffin Books. ISBN 978-0-14-030688-0. Great as a transition between picture books and more advanced reading because of the use of repeating phrases in each stories (if I read 'nice white cottage with the thatched roof where Milly-Molly -Mandy lived' one more time...).

First published almost thirty years ago, Otam and Kitamura's depiction of Arthur remains a classic which continues to entertain and warn us all against unreasonable anger.Spring has sprung and the animal staff of the Heartwood Hotel gear up for another busy season in the next installment of this adorable illustrated chapter book series. MMM is sweet and not overly so. Her family manages to be eccentric enough to be interesting. Her little village seems rather sleepy and quiet, where everyone knows everyone else. They are probably poor since they all live in the same house but they adjust well and use the power of 6 adult brains to work and help instead of fighting. Milly-Molly-Mandy has 6 people to ask advice from, and none of them force it on her. Hay, Samantha (2011). Milly-Molly-Mandy's Things to Make and Do, Based on the stories by Joyce Lankester Brisely. Pan Macmillan. ISBN 978-0230754942.

I decided to try it to see if I would read it with my son in the next year or two. Despite it being about a girl, and a girl many many decades past, I do think he'd quite enjoy the stories about Milly-Molly-Mandy. But the stories themselves were actually first published in the Christian Science Monitor (a newspaper) starting around 1925. This I never knew until I started researching these books for this lens. Mangan, Lucy (15 February 2018). "My life as a bookworm: what children can teach us about how to read". The Guardian . Retrieved 15 February 2018.This book is feminist without even trying. There is a capable boy neighbour but the others are all girls. Children's beginner readers: Milly-Molly-Mandy Infant Reader (1936-1939) by Joyce Lankester Brisely, adapted by Margaret McCrea; Four book series; George G. Harrap publishing. In the 1950s these illustrated books were reprinted by The Australasian Publishing Company, in Australia. [43] Little Friend Susan (Susan Moggs) is Milly-Molly-Mandy's best friend. She lives with her mother and father and little sister Doris in a cottage near Milly-Molly-Mandy's. The series turned 90 years old this year so it's not the most current one, but imo it has aged very well. The stories are about stuff any child could potentially be interested in; finding an abandoned train, getting a pet hedgehog, having your teacher spend a few nights at your home, and going to the coast for the first time. None of the stories are moralising, and very few of them present an overtly normative idea of gender. The most important message of Milly-Molly-Mandy is that one should be kind to others, which, I think, is what everyone should aspire to. (In one of my fave stories Milly-Molly-Mandy finds out that there's A MEAN GANG in her village so she and her friends start A KIND GANG, and soon the members of the other gang start to get bored of doing mean things and even join MMM's gang of kindness.) The stories are just endlessly nice and cosy, without any huge conflicts or drama. I found them genuinely funny as well, although that is partly thanks to my gf who is an excellent reader.
