About this deal

We tested the 55 inch model (UN55TU8000FXZA), but these results are alsovalid for the 43 inch, 50 inch, 65 inch, 75 inch, and 85 inch models. Walmart sells this TV as the Samsung TU8200, but it's only available in 50, 55, and65 inch sizes. Size year’s Samsung 3DTV models for use with the Sky 3D channel in the UK, since the video signal is both 50hz and side-by-side encoded! There’s no doubt that the picture comes with some limitations at its price, but overall the TU8000 impresses with its natural colour handling, crisp, detailed picture, solid motion processing and good upscaling. It needs some settings tweaked to perform to the very best of its abilities, though. We uploaded the latest brightness measurements and uniformity photos for the Accelerated Longevity Test. created by Samsung: a data-sheet is imported from an official source from a manufacturer. But the data-sheet is not yet standardized by an Icecat editor.

Taking a step down to SDR with The Amazing Spider-man 2 on Blu-ray, there’s a lot more for this set to get its teeth into, color-wise. Watching the Times Square scene, it’s clear this TV upscales well. The shot over the neon-lit New York streets still shows tremendous micro dimming control. The lights of windows and advertising boards don’t spill into the nearby dark and the picture remains clean. Closer in on the action, there’s still plenty of intensity to the colors, if not quite the same subtlety as we saw at 4K. There are plenty of layers to the blue of Electro’s pulsing form, the yellow of the New York taxis is as we’d expect and the bright red and blue of Spidey’s outfit looks great against the night-time streets. Finally, motion settings fall under an option called Picture Clarity. Opt for custom and you can set the judder settings yourself. Something around 3 or 4 seemed to work best for most content we watched, and motion is, for the most part, admirably stable. The only real issue worth pointing out is the Samsung UE55D8000?s inability to fully saturate Blue. This is not really obvious without intimate knowledge of the content being viewed, or without a perfect comparison display. All of the other colours were as visibly perfect as we could hope for in terms of both chromaticity and luminance, meaning that colour appeared realistic and not overblown. We’re happy to see that an improvement has been made on the 2010 models, which also had difficulty in producing a fully saturated Red. 3D Calibration 3D Mode Greyscale Each of several items in a list, preceded by a bullet symbol for emphasis. For easy access to this data, refer to the "BulletPoints" tag in XML or JSON. And in 3D (improved in terms of crosstalk and stability over Samsung’s 2010 offerings) it’s impressively immersive, delivering ample depth of field and proving solid even off-axis. We’re used to having four HDMIs to choose from, even at this price, but the TU8000 only has three. That means even a fairly humble setup of a set-top box, Blu-ray player and games console will use up those parts from the off, with one lost if the set is wall-mounted.

If you're looking for an even more affordable option, take a look at the step down: the TU7100. The TU8000 is the better TV, but the 7100 is terrific value, especially if you can find it reduced during one of the sale seasons. We think it'd make a great second screen and also comes in 43-inch sizes, so it's a solid option for smaller spaces. Please note: Failure to produce the card and relevant ID means we are unable to release goods on collection. Although some options have been moved around, there are no major functional additions to the Picture setup menu when compared to last year’s high-end models. Samsung’s excellent calibration controls (which include a three-axis Colour Management system and 10-point Greyscale/Gamma control) are present, and should allow the images put out by the UE55D8000 to be adjusted to nearly perfect levels. 2D Calibration We’re only too aware that not everyone is exactly bubbling over with excitement at the arrival of Smart TVs, with their online, apps-based functionality, feeling that they’re an unnecessary complication of a TV with something that can be done better on other types of device. But while it’s not perfect, we honestly think that a few hours spent with the UE55D8000 could be enough to change many naysayers’ minds. We did not undertake full 3D Colour calibration with the Samsung UE55D8000. As with the 2010 models, there is only one “Custom” Colour Space memory per input, meaning that if we wanted to get perfect colour performance (relative to the HDTV Rec.709 specification) out of the D8000 in its 3D mode, then we would have to sacrifice accuracy in 2D. Instead, we adjusted the remaining controls that ARE saved independently for 2D and 3D ([Colour Space] and [Colour]) as a next-best alternative:

Familiar from other Samsungs, we’re offered two Game mode options. If you opt to select Game Motion Plus, you’ll retain some elements of beneficial picture processing. In this mode, input lag measures around 26.7ms (which is fine for casual gaming). However if you disable Game Motion Plus, and go hardcore Game mode, input lag drops to a mere 11.7ms (measured at 1080p/60fps), which can be considered excellent.

The Samsung TU8000 TV will recognise whenever you’re playing compatible HDR content, and switch to an HDR mode automatically, so any settings you change at this point will remain in place for HDR content only. Once complete, the Samsung TU8000 TV will appear as a device within the SmartThings app alongside any other compatible devices you might have in the house. You can then control your TV via your phone if you’ve misplaced the remotes… or just can’t be bothered to get up to get them. Colours are just as well-handled here as they are in HDR, so the red and gold of Iron Man’s suit are suitably striking without being over the top, while the contrast in darker scenes remains impressive with a helping hand from the extra processing. We like the added whallop from Adaptive, which strikes a good balance of adding some weight to the low end without losing out on too much clarity through the midrange. The Samsung UE55TU8000 has two built-in speakers, each with 10W power. The total output power of 20W is usually sufficient, unless you are too far from the TV. In this case, you should buy external speakers that turn your room into a home theater. If you buy external speakers, you can also use the multi-room link technology. The sound is very clear, but it depends on the quality of the content. We will give 4/5 points for the Samsung UE55TU8000 review part of the sound. Design A Smart TV is a platform that can run 3rd party Apps. 3rd party content providers may remove Apps from the Smart TV platform or stop supporting them at any time, and we cannot guarantee an App’s availability. When new Smart TV products are launched, there may also be a delay before certain Apps become available. Availability of Apps is not included within the terms of the manufacturer’s warranty, or the John Lewis 2-year Guarantee for audio visual products, or the 5-year Guarantee for TVs. Uses an anologue connetion which carries picture signals that have been split into colour and brightness. For an improved picture you may want to consider upgraging to HDMI connector which carries digital picture and sound signals.
