Each set of strings has corresponding tuning pegs called “ kuntis.” The pegs can be simple (nail-like), fluted, or lotus-shaped while expensive sitars can have elaborately carved tuning pegs. Despite the song’s popularity, Shankar wasn’t impressed when he first heard Harrison playing the sitar. I prefer this tuning, although I have another sitar loaded with the low bass Sa string that gives me that extra bass veena range on the sitar. I like to dabble on this especially in classical performances and recordings. It is a great space for doing alaaps with the slow deep meditative expressiveness.Introducing Blogger Mala Chandrashekhar - a specialist academically trained in modern Western sciences, yet deeply enamored with India's timeless ethnic arts, crafts, and textiles. What I'd like to cover here is the gauge of strings I use on my personal sitars. Realizing that this might vary from what is being sold out there, I'll let you decide what's best for your needs. But I've used this combination for over 15 years and have found them to be exceptionally reliable and very satifactory with my playing style. There are two popular modern styles of sitar: the fully decorated "instrumental style" (sometimes called the "Ravi Shankar style") and the "gayaki" style (sometimes called the " Vilayat Khan" style). During the 1700s, the sitar went from three to five strings, as was used in the Hamir-Raso by Rajasthan author Jodhraj. For a solo sitarist the sitar tends to be tuned to one key and the player hardly deviates from this. This is probably the case with most classical sitarists. But even though the general tuning is in the same key, there is often a need to change the strings within the key. For instance in raga Marava, since the 5th note Pancham is not used the drone of the strings that are usually tuned to Pa has to be tuned to maybe a 3rd (Sa) above Pa, or Dha above Pa, or as some sitarists do, latch it to a clip so that those strings are put out of commission. But if the strings are tuned higher, they should be of a gauge that can take such a range.

This centuries-old instrument, 700 years according to some music historians, has undergone numerous changes to optimize its structure and tonality. Despite having 18 to 21 strings, only one set of 5 to 7 strings on a sitar can be actively played. Playing strings is the combination of one or two melody strings + drone strings. Only the melody strings are fretted and can play notes/create melodies. Here, we discuss how many strings standardized models of the sitar have and how they are used. All about: Strings on the Indian sitar Note: Like guitar tablature notation, my article assumes that the top string represents the bottom string closest to the floor. Standard TuningSitar strings are made from metal. They can be made from steel, bronze, brass, or copper ranging from 0.22 mm to 0.85 mm. Lavezzoli, Peter (2006). The Dawn of Indian Music in the West.
