Peter May is a man who paints pictures, gloriously detailed pictures, with words. I could 'see' as I read. And although I did not enjoy this story as much as my previous read by this author, the writing remains superb.
No-Face is first seen lingering outside of Yubaba's Bathhouse, out in the rain. He takes an interest in her new servant, a human named Chihiro Ogino, because of her actions and sincerity. Chihiro sees him out in the rain, and not knowing who he is, allows him inside the Bathhouse. Let’s not forget that Chihiro, like No-Face, is also lonely. Her parents were turned into pigs, after all. And she was getting ready to start a new school where she didn’t know anyone–just as No-Face finds himself in a bathhouse without a single friend in sight. When No-Face throws the world’s biggest tantrum and Chihiro calms him down using the medicine, you could say that she was, in fact, calming her own nerves. It’s only then that she’s able to find No-Face a forever home and save her parents. In that sense, the whole film’s actually about Chihiro’s struggle to overcome herself, the resentful monster growing within her. What Will Your Reflection Show? The Man With No Face is a political thriller with clandestine intrigue and conspiracies, suspense, murder and just the merest hint of a romance. As Bannerman slowly unearths information surrounding the murdered men, he has no idea of the danger he’s putting himself in as his investigation gains momentum. The edges of his world-weary cynicism are being systematically worn away by the feelings awakened in him by Tania’s carer and his anxiety over Tania herself. This secondary thread of Bannerman’s connection with Tania, and her characterisation, is very well done. Much less was known about autism and the treatments available weren’t particularly helpful at the time of this story. It’s obvious the condition has been well researched.
I would like to thank Netgalley and Quercus Books for a review copy of The Man with No Face, a revised edition of a stand alone thriller set in Brussels in 1979, originally published in 1981.Bannerman is in the right place at the right time and using all his investigative experiences he sets about discovering the truth. He is very concerned for the safety of Tania, now an orphan, but more importantly a vital witness. Always a hard man, he is surprised at the strong protective feelings he has developed for Tania. He fears for her safety and this spurs him on to action. If No-Face truly is a blank slate that reflects our impressions and expectations, then perhaps he appears differently to everyone, including to each one of us. A parent or older sibling might see No-Face as a child. A little girl might see him as a ghost and another might see his wide mouth and declare him a monster. Still, others might view him as timid and shy or even mischievous. Perhaps that’s the point, and why Miyazaki won’t say one way or the other. The Faceless Men possess the ability to physically change their faces, shapeshifting so that they appear as an entirely new person.
Jaded Edinburgh journalist Neil Bannerman is sent to Europe, intent on digging up dirt. Yet it is danger he discovers, when two British men are found murdered. It could be inferred that Mrs. Carmody from The Mist was being manipulated by Flagg under the belief she was being guided by God; while praying she uses the phrase "My life for you", a phrase commonly associated with Flagg, which would make him the unseen antagonist. Alternatively, it could simply be another instance of synchronicity across levels of the Tower. Towards the end of the film, No-Face meets with Zeniba, another witch who works alone, in contrast to Yubaba, who runs her bathhouse with a complex hierarchy. Perhaps attempting to match the rules of the new tiny society, No-Face starts spinning and knitting and appears proficient in the job. Happy with his new environment, he accepts Zeniba's proposal to stay with her as an apprentice.
Brussels is in flux as the political landscape changes and it is up to Bannerman to see if he can uncover any scandals within the party ranks, some juicy newspaper headlines. Bannerman is to bunk up with a fellow Post colleague, Tony Slater, but on arrival in Brussels he immediately feels that he is not welcome at Slater’s rented accommodation. Slater’s young daughter, Tania, lives with him. Tania is autistic with, as Bannerman discovers, an incredible talent for sketching. Bannerman and Slater clash from the outset with Bannerman’s journalistic intuition pointing to an unease in Slater’s countenance. When No-Face attempts to tip Chihiro, she politely refuses him and rushes off somewhere else. Feeling insulted and betrayed by the one creature he actually has interest in, No-Face throws a tantrum and devours two more spirit workers. Albeit it rather on the slow side, for me personally, I still found The Man With No Face intensely gripping. Although at times, also somewhat depressing. These are not happy characters and they all carry a ton of issues to deal with. Or not as most seem quite happy to drown their sorrows. And in the midst of all this, is a young girl who may actually know what really happened. Unfortunately for investigators, she’s autistic and doesn’t talk.
The "hand of God" appears and detonates the warhead, destroying the city and all of Flagg's followers in it. Flagg himself dematerializes just before the blast, surviving to reappear on a remote and unnamed beach. The Man With No Face defended Chin when the Winter Soldier came to assassinate him. One Sunday when his usual babysittter is unable to work, Slater is forced to take his daughter to a meeting with a British government Minister. While playing in the cloakroom of the Minister's house, Tania witnesses an assassination and sees the assassin leaving the house. After dinning at Slater’s home and meeting his autistic daughter Tania he ops to leave and stay at a nearby hotel. He had never liked Slater and the feeling was mutual. When Slater is subsequently found murdered along with a junior minister, at his home, there is a witness to who has done this, his autistic daughter who has a sharp mind and talent for detail and drawing but the inability to communicate which results in outburst of screaming and frustration. Unfortunately she did not see the man’s face, but the killer is already planning to tie up that loose end.
