About this deal

I’ve spent way more time in the bike trade than anyone should reasonably want to. In that time I’ve wanted to make cycling jargon and marketing easier to cut through to help people get the bike of their dreams. For riders who need a shorter crankset, they will need to opt for 150 R7000 as it is available in 160mm. Cycle to Work is a salary sacrifice scheme, where you can save up to 42% off a new Bike and Safety equipment. This means the cost is deducted from your salary as a non-cash benefit, so you save on tax and national insurance. If you're buying a new road bike with the latest Tiagra, there's no doubt about it, you're getting a better bike for your money. Verdict The brakes, the 105 brakes are so good. They work faultlessly, and they provide a lot more stopping power than the Tiagra ones. In fact, even if we built a 10-speed Tiagra groupset, we would upgrade the brakes to the 105 version. The 105 is lighter, and it does deliver crisper gear changes.

Tiagra brakes have also seen a good amount of improvement and an increase in stopping power. However, they aren't of the same quality as 105. Tiagra is a really impressive groupset. It does everything you want from a mid-level road bike with only a few minor quibbles. The biggest decision is whether you're really fussed about having the 11-speed of Shimano's more expensive 105. A key difference between 105 and Tiagra is that the 105 is intended for 11-speed and the large chainring has teeth between 46 and 53. I noticed the article didn't mention Shimano's lowest end group, Tourney, did Shimano stopped making that group?Tiagra offers excellent value for money but 105 is certainly the better groupset and we’d recommend going for it if your funds allow because of the better brakes, the small weight saving and the upgrade to 11-speed. My plan to increase the size of my cassette to 32 teeth got very complicated when I was informed that Tiagra had a different cable pull to 105. Phase 1 saw me making do with 30 teeth which works fine with the 105 mech( despite it having a nominal maximum of 28 teeth).

The other major difference between the two groupsets is that the 105 brakes are considerably better than Tiagra ones. They are a real highlight both in terms of all-out power and fingertip control. I have a barrel adjuster on the down tube so, with careful pretensioning of the cable, I've been able to adjust the indexing with travel to spare in the event of stretch. Tiagra 4700 is the latest groupset from Shimano to get a makeover, and in doing so it has made Tiagra the best it's ever been. On its own, it's not quite as good as the more expensive 105, but if you're buying a new bike with Tiagra 4700, you won't be disappointed. Whereas gear cables used to come out of the side of the shifter body and arc externally to the frame, the 4700 shifter cables are routed under the bar tape. With the 11-speed 105 groupset, there has been quite a lot of technology which has filtered down from the top groupsets of Dura-Ace and Ultegra. The Tiagra groupset is heavier. As with pretty much everything in road cycling, you pay more to have lighter components. Dual Brake Levers - MechanicalThat's the problem with Tiagra, Sora, and Claris is that you can't upgrade if you have Tiagra to say 105 without replacing the whole transmission system, so it's wiser just from that standpoint alone to go with 105. As we’ve already mentioned, the 105 shifters will allow you to shift the rear chain around 11 cogs. There is though the ability with Tiagra to get a front shifter which will allow you to use a triple chainring at the front. So it looks like you'll pull 3.78mm when you really want 3.92mm on a 10 spd cassette (the pitch tables say 3.74mm and 3.95mm - presumably due to rounding effects) Are the latest Tiagra rear derailleurs compatible with 105 (5700) 10 sp. shifters? (And vice versa, ie are new Tiagra shifters OK to work with a 5700 105 derailleur?) tiagra is different to all the other Shimano road 10 speed. It does indeed use the same pull ‘ratio’ as 11 speed, but the actual amount of cable it pulls is different to both traditional Shimano 10 speed road and Shimano 11 speed road.
