I llustrated catalogue of 300 Paintings by Old Masters of Dutch, Flemish, French, and English School Being Some of the Principal Pictures Which Have at Various Times Formed Part of Sedelmeyer Galler y. Sedelmeyer Gallery. Unlike the situation in Italy, France, Germany and other major European countries at the time, where the artists were dependent on commissions from the church, state or aristocratic patrons, Dutch painters in the 1600s were “free” to work for an “independent art market.” The great Enlightenment philosopher Baruch Spinoza, born in Amsterdam and whose life span (1632-1677) coincided almost identically with Vermeer’s, argued in 1670 that “in a free state every man may think what he likes, and say what he thinks.” This same principle, whether or not it could be realized at the time, undoubtedly emboldened the Dutch artists of the Golden Age. Vermeer’s work The show includes masterpieces such as Girl with a Pearl Earring (Mauritshuis, The Hague), The Geographer ( Städel Museum, Frankfurt am Main), Letter Writer and Maid ( National Gallery of Ireland, Dublin) and Woman Holding a Balance ( National Gallery of Art, Washington), along with works that have never before been accessible to visitors in the Netherlands, such as the recently-restored Woman reading a letter at the open window from the Old Masters Picture Gallery in Dresden. Meanwhile, Waldemar Januszczak summarised it in the Sunday Times: “Paradigm-shifting, brilliantly presented, cleverly designed, revelatory, intoxicating — this is one of the great art experiences of my lifetime. And yours.”

Although a devout observer of the surface of things, which he became within a few short years, Vermeer was not a realist. His paintings are careful, complex constructions. The Philippe de Montebello Years: Curators Celebrate Three Decades of Acquisitions. The Metropolitan Museum of Art.
