About this deal

Draw attention to the way colour is used throughout the book by discussing some of the following questions: London: Walker Books [London], 2004 Z1134871 2004 single work picture book children's ( taught in 1 units) Abstract Now invite the children to read on in pairs and to think aloud themselves. Encourage them to speculate and ask questions as they read the spreads. Sentence starters such as those below will support this type of thinking:

Window by Jeannie Baker is a picture book; its illustrations present the reader with the story of a boy and the view from his bedroom window of the landscape below. As he grows up, the area he observes gradually develops from a lush, rural wilderness to a highly urbanised scene. The message is clear: humans are drastically and directly changing the planet through their actions. In this learning opportunity, students will focus on the particular artelements of shape, texture and colour, expanding their knowledge of these elements. Students will be introduced to the picture book by Jeannie Bakercalled Mirror, which shows the comparison of two boys and theirfamilies, one in Sydney and the other in Morocco. Students will be able toapply their knowledge of the particular elements through focusing on specificillustrations that exist in Mirror as well as their ownartwork created in the previous lesson. The intended participants for thislearning experience will be primary school children who are in the year level ofgrades 3 and 4.

Worksheetactivity: Studentswill each be given ‘The Artistic Work of Jeannie Baker’ worksheet to completewhich focuses on the work of Jeannie Baker and the story of Window. I think this book had a major impact upon the children, emphasising the importance of protecting our rainforests and the impact of urbanisation.

The book is designed to be read side by side. Look at the first spread together modelling reading the Australian story from left to right and the Moroccan from right to left. Works are held in permanent collections of The Powerhouse Museum (Sydney), National Library of Australia (Canberra), Queensland Art Gallery (Brisbane), State Library of New South Wales, State Library of Victoria and Art Gallery Western Australia (Perth)

I personally like Home better than this wordless picture book since it is more hopeful. Of course on the other hand Window definitely realistically portrays what is happening with cities and the countryside.

Where the Forest Meets the Sea (10-minute, 35mm animated film, produced by Screen Australia, directed by Baker) Window, a wordless picture book, is incredibly effective at communicating its message to readers without the need for text alongside the collage constructions. Thank you for your kind words. I love it when teachers share ideas and yours is very original. I think I'll try it when the next opportunity arrives. All the best to you and your class. Hide replies

polished or smooth surface (e.g. of polished metal or silvered glass) that forms images by reflection. Yes, it’s a very simple concept, but once I really started thinking about it, it wasn’t so simple at all! Every tiny change that happened made me think about things. Even things that stay the same still change with age, and the population might increase, but the time is different at the beginning of the book to the end, so there are social changes – in people’s clothing, hairstyle, the sort of cars that people drive ….’
