About this deal

Super Spirograph is interesting – it’s like a cross between a train set and the traditional Spirograph! As well as the regular rings used to guide the gears around, it comes with sections that snap together, to create your own bespoke shaped rings. It also comes with a special 50th Anniversary die-cast golden wheel (gear), which is just a nice thing to have. This is a serious piece of kit with a lot of components. The most, I think, of any kit so far. It’s on sale at the moment, so grab it to keep arty kids occupied during the school summer holidays! Spirograph mini set Includes: 10 piece travel version of Spirograph with built-in design ring, work surface and storage, 2 pens, 6 wheels, travel-sized paper sheets and details guide A wheel must be placed inside a stationary plate or ring for designs to be drawn. Each plate needs to be held in place with Spiro-putty, magnets, or pins. Sets come with one of these three options (except for travel sets, which have a plate built into the lid). His company, Denys Fisher Toys, was sold to Palitoy in 1970 which was then bought by Hasbro . Through the 1980s and 1990s, Fisher continued to work with Hasbro in developing new toys and refining Spirograph. It has since been sold by Kahootz toys, and most recently, Playmonster. Spirograph is a geometric drawing device that produces mathematical roulette curves of the variety technically known as hypotrochoids and epitrochoids. The well-known toy version was developed by British engineer Denys Fisher and first sold in 1965.

In its simplest form, Spirograph consists of a circle moving around inside another circle. This means its motion can be predicted, and the line you get will, or may, depend on a few factors: The second one of these – where inside the small circle the pen-hole is – is also a bit more information than we need. Since the orientation of the small circle will change as it goes round the big circle, the only thing that matters about the position of the pen is how far away from the centre it is. That is, if you have two holes on the cog which are the same distance from the centre of the cog, they’ll both draw the same pattern, even if you start from the same place – again, it just might be rotated around, as you’ll be starting from a different point along the line. The original US-released Spirograph consisted of two differently sized plastic rings (or stators), with gear teeth on both the inside and outside of their circumferences. Once either of these rings were held in place (either by pins, with an adhesive, or by hand) any of several provided gearwheels (or rotors)—each having holes for a ballpoint pen—could be spun around the ring to draw geometric shapes. Later, the Super-Spirograph introduced additional shapes such as rings, triangles, and straight bars. All edges of each piece have teeth to engage any other piece; smaller gears fit inside the larger rings, but they also can rotate along the rings' outside edge or even around each other. Gears can be combined in many different arrangements. Sets often included variously colored pens, which could enhance a design by switching colors, as seen in the examples shown here.Spirographs inspire creativity. Use colored pens and pencils to bring color and an extra level of depth to your creations. Some sets are sold with colored markers for this very purpose, but you can also use any marker that fits in the wheel holes. If l = 1 {\displaystyle l=1} , then the point A {\displaystyle A} is on the circumference of C i {\displaystyle C_{i}} . In this case the trajectories are called hypocycloids and the equations above reduce to those for a hypocycloid. If you’re not familiar, the apparatus involves a plastic cog, placed inside a circular hole with teeth, which has holes in it to place a pen/pencil through. Placing a pen in one of the holes and moving it around allows you to draw interesting patterns – the teeth of the circle and teeth on the cog will mesh to make the circle move and turn at the same time, and with the right pressure applied in the right direction, you can roll it around the inside of the circle, making interesting shapes. Or from that set, using one of the shapes that isn’t circular, like the long thin extended one, or the rugby-ball shaped cog. Reply The 21st century saw the invention of digital Spirograph apps. These were the same as the classic Spirograph, but they were able to be replicated digitally. There are many different Spirograph apps available, and they’re also a lot less messy than the original Spirograph. The apps use a series of rotating discs to create spiralling patterns. So, while the digital Spirograph apps don’t look like the classic Spirograph, they are the same thing.

While I can’t pinpoint exactly who invented the Spirograph, I found out about spiral drawing devices as the inspiration behind the toy. Popular in the late 18th century, these spiral devices used a rotating pencil to create spiralling patterns. Although they don’t look like a Spirograph and weren’t as popular, they were the first device to ever use a worm to create line patterns. x = x c + x ′ = ( R − r ) cos ⁡ t + ρ cos ⁡ t ′ , y = y c + y ′ = ( R − r ) sin ⁡ t + ρ sin ⁡ t ′ , {\displaystyle {\begin{aligned}x&=x_{c}+x'=(R-r)\cos t+\rho \cos t',\\y&=y_{c}+y'=(R-r)\sin t+\rho \sin t',\\\end{aligned}}} Kaveney, Wendy. The Original Spirograph® Deluxe Set features all the iconic wheels and rings of the original, re-engineered and updated for today. Each Spirograph wheel has several holes into which you place a pencil or pen to create a design. Some sets have larger holes than others, and newer sets tend to have larger holes than older sets. Larger holes allow for the use of a greater variety of writing instruments. While small holes limit instrument choice, they hold the pen or pencil tighter, which can make drawing easier.
