About this deal

Though it’s not aged nearly as long as the previous expression, this one is still top-notch. It contains a blend of rums that are aged for an average of six years. The Dominican environment is hot and humid which does increase the speed of aging. This expression is aged almost entirely in American bourbon barrels which are routinely scraped and re-charred to achieve the optimal flavor.

Twelve years ago, when I first reviewed Barcelo Imperial I noted problems with the synthetic cork which came apart when I opened my bottle. I did not experience any problems this time. I bumped the score up accordingly. In the Glass 9/10 The nose is sweet and inviting with notes of toasted oak and creme brulee. The palate is initially sweet which leads to a little oiliness. In the middle, you’ll find notes of traditional Trinidad rum with mineral notes and flavors of vanilla, nutmeg, and butterscotch. The mouthfeel is thin and easy to sip. 3. Ron Barcelo Gran Anejo This classic, beachy recipe requires the use of a real coconut. If you can’t get one you can still make the drink, but it’s better to go after the true experience. Translated as “crazy coconut,” it’s famous among locals and while many variations exist, nothing beats the original recipe. Vizcaya represents a full product line from Oliver & Oliver, naming this expression after the impressive age of the spirit. It’s aged for an average of 18-21 years in bourbon barrels and is made from fresh cane juice instead of molasses. Other rums produced include Barceló Premium Blend 30 Aniv., Platinum, Gran Añejo, Añejo, Dorado, Blanco and Barceló Cream. The series is a fine collection of reserves aged for an extended time in barrels from different latitudes, reaffirming the brand’s commitment to continue innovating, and offering consumers new and fascinating sensory experiences. In der Nase dunkel und tief. Am Grund liegt dunkles Holz mit Karamell-Toffee Bonbons obendrauf. Als Topping gibt's Kakao und herbe Gewürze, sehr mehrdimensional.

Overall, the Ron Barcelo Imperial Rum is matured for ten years, finishing with two years in horizontal French oak barrels. This is contrary to the traditional vertical aging in bourbon barrels. The nose here is quite complex with many different aromas to navigate. First, you find notes of wood and spice soon followed by almond and butterscotch. Leave it to breathe for a moment and you’ll find that notes of vanilla, banana peel, and oranges emerge. On the nose, you’ll find notes of roasted coffee, milk chocolate, and dried apricots. The palate is full-bodied with distinct notes of cherries, cinnamon, raisins, caramelized apples, candied oranges, and sweet strawberries. This wonderful medley of delightful flavors is topped off with a long, simple finish of toffee. 5. Brugal XV Rum

Always committed to being one of the important references on the road to the premiumisation of the rum category, Ron Barceló now unveils its newest series of Rare Blends Collection rums, which stand out for their ageing in barrels from different latitudes that lead the consumer to explore the world in every sip. Barcelo Imperial is sold in an open front cardboard box display which highlights the bottle within. It is a large flask style bottle which oozes elegance and style. A solid dense cork topper completes the bottle design and gives the rum a nnice ‘wow’ factor. Nose: Rich toffee and dark brown sugar accent fine oak spices and hints of sap. Vanilla and baking spice appear as does a mild scent of fresh copper pennies. Notes of almond have have appeared and they have began to meld with the toffee and vanilla giving me a real sense of marzipan. Dark chocolate is hinted at as are canned apricots and orange liqueur. In the Mouth 53/60 The first sips bring forward a robust oakiness combined with impressions of dark brown sugar, vanilla, spices (nutmeg, allspice and cinnamon) and pipe tobacco. Those fresh copper pennies I noticed on the nose seem to have found expression as a sort of metallic coppery flavour (pop a penny in your mouth and you’ll know what I mean). I taste marzipan as well as canned apricots, and perhaps even a little orange marmalade as well. Bits of cola and dark chocolate complete the flavour profile which is much much better than I remember. In the Throat 13/15 The exceptional characteristics of these new spirits represent the evolution of Ron Barceló Imperial, a brand that has won the world’s most important awards for its outstanding quality.

The brand elevates Dominican rum to the highest level, always preserving the seal of quality that has been a hallmark of the company for almost 100 years. This ultra-premium rum range includes Barceló Imperial Porto Cask, Barceló Imperial Mizunara Cask, and Barceló Imperial Maple Cask. This one-of-a-kind rum, tailored for the most discerning palates, has aromas of figs and wild fruit jams that blend perfectly with the strong notes of butterscotch, dried cherries and smoked wood.Pour it into your glass. If not using a coconut, a highball glass is ideal, or something tall and round. The finish is lengthened with flavours of dark toffee and baking spice. Hints of menthol provide a touch of cooling on the throat and then I notice a bittersweet chocolate fade. The Aftermath 9.0/10
