The story revolves around the rebellion of human kind as tied in with Satan's rebellion and the perception of humans, angels and demons that God has withdrawn Himself and can be overthrown. The book ties up with this being disproved and with repentance and redemption. There is a view of Hell that owes more to Dante Alighieri than the Bible. Since I wasn’t a huge fan of the characters in the beginning, it was the superb storytelling that kept me reading.This was a work of wonderful historical fiction, set in brutal and violent times, which completely captures the medieval sensibility of superstition and fear of the supernatural embedded in the mindset of a world without science or education. It genuinely feels like the End of Days, captures exactly the mood of Revelations. I kind of wish we got a little more scenes with the angels towards the end. Don't get me wrong, I totally loved the balance between fantasy and realism and I was pretty happy with the conclusion. But what I missed was the unpredictability of the final showdown. I would've preferred if both sides were more evenly matched to make the battle more exciting.
