Resincoat Etch and Clean is the easy way to prepare and clean your concrete floor before painting or resurfacing. Resin based materials are usually hard to clean and the solvents used to clean them are pretty harsh on the hands so take care when using such cleaners and wear gloves, masks, eye protection etc.

Concrete is an incredibly stable and durable material. While versions of cement are millennia old, modern hydraulic concrete was first created in 1756. Concrete buildings, bridges, and other surfaces that are hundreds of years old are still standing today. Bob Vila has been America’s Handyman since 1979. As the host of beloved and groundbreaking TV series including “This Old House” and “Bob Vila’s Home Again,” he popularized and became synonymous with “do-it-yourself” home improvement. There are specialist fillers available for metal of which one of our favourites is Unibond repair metal. This, as are most metal and stone repair kits, is an epoxy based filler so care must be taken that you are completely ready to make the repair when the filler is mixed. The filler will be hard in seconds, so don’t waste it. In this instance DIY Doctor has used brown boot polish to colour the filler to a light brown but many other colours can be achieved using the same method. When using epoxy repair mortars, the hardener is tipped into the resin aggregate and (for ease) a mixer paddle is used to get a good, uniform mix. It takes about 4 – 6 minutes to mix a 20Kg tub of epoxy mortar.

Structural issues can come in quite a range and include things like the fact the ground supporting the foundation, path, slab etc. is sinking, the foundation supporting the given structure, path etc. has failed or the fact that the concrete mix that has been used to create the object isn’t strong enough and is now failing.

Many but not all liquid caulks, sealers, and patches come premixed. Dry mixes require water, followed by hand mixing until they reach the desired consistency—which could be a combination of the manufacturer’s recommendations and how runny you need it to be. It’s best to follow mixing directions as closely as possible, but you can thin the mix with a minimal amount of extra water if absolutely necessary. As most repair compounds are quite fast setting, regardless of what they are; epoxy, latex or cement based they will need to be prepared and mixed with either water or a specific hardener before they are used. Within 15 minutes of application, you can sand it by hand or with a power sander. Wait another 15 minutes, and it will be ready for you to stain or paint as you desire. The acrylic-based wood filler requires lacquer thinner for cleanup. It should be used in an area with good ventilation, whether indoors or outside. Wear gloves while working with this product, as it can irritate your skin. Although many mortar patching compounds are good at what they do, they’re not quite as effective as their latex or epoxy counterparts, so if you can always opt for one of these. Each product has its own curing time, which is essentially the time it takes to dry fully and be ready for traffic. Some materials also have set times, which means it’s not quite dry but won’t move or run, and might even survive light rain. There are also a variety of specialist fillers on the market, such as ones suited for outdoor use. Some of the more common ones are:

Wood fillers – These are generally formulated with wood fibres to help make them suitable for wood repairs. Once filled, smooth the filler out by moving the knife over in different directions, starting from the centre of the filled area. Repeat until you have a smooth surface. It is also completely waterproof as it has a resin base and will withstand any temperatures without crumbling. It will (usually) accept foot traffic after about 4 hours and is fully cured after 24 hours. Please do however read the instructions on the individual containers as some epoxies vary a little.Other reasons for failure can come from chemical damage to the concrete and also where any steel reinforcement in the concrete fails due to corrosion. Though manufacturers don’t typically indicate set or cure times in product descriptions, most quality products will set within the hour and cure within a few hours. If a product requires mixing with water, the amount of water used will have some bearing on cure time. Some wood fillers can be screwed into after they have been allowed to dry and fully cure. Typically, any wood filler that is made from epoxy will have a dense, firm composition after curing that makes it possible to screw into the wood filler. It's recommended to create a pilot hole before screwing into the filler, however. As we have stated above, your best bet is to go for an epoxy repair mortar as this will generally give the best results. Resincoat acid resistant repair mortar is ideal for permanent repairs to acid damaged concrete. Boasting a curing time of just 6-8 hours at 20°C, this product is great for time-critical repairs.
