I would say that all the main characters feel slightly warmer in the books than they do on TV. James is warmer and funnier than he’s written on the TV series, and Tristan is more competent and mature. Some of the disasters that almost always happen to Tristan in the TV series happen to other people, including James, in the books. The friendship between James and Tristan is something that just seems to happen very naturally in the book – Herriot doesn’t “gush” about how great a friend Tristan is or anything like that (it’s not a sentimental book) but they do seem to spend quite a bit of time together and get on well. This was one of the aspects that I didn’t think worked all that well in the series – it often feels to me as if Tristan is trying too hard with James and that James is rather disapproving of him. Helen also seems a good deal nicer, partly due to the fact that there is no Richard Edmundson sub-plot in the part of the books that I have read so far, so it doesn’t come across as if she is stringing both James and Richard along. The antics of 24 year-old Glaswegian James Herriot, getting used to the ropes as a veterinary assistant in 1930s Yorkshire.

I can see that the TV series is not an accurate adaptation of the James Herriot books. I still enjoy the TV series, but it’d be interesting to discover how much contrasts differently in the book. I’m amazed there are stories featured in the book that would eventually adapt into episodes of Series 1, 2 and even 4 which I’ve not seen yet.

A retrospective to James’s college days, when he fancied himself an expert on horses after attending one lecture.

If Only They Could Talk: The Classic Memoir of a 1930s Vet

This beautiful Macmillan Collector's Library edition of If Only They Could Talk features an afterword by Yorkshire Shepherdess and author Amanda Owen. Herriot arrives to Yorkshire Dales looking for a job as Veterinary Surgeon Assistant with the veterinarian Siegfried Farnon. James Herriot realizes that the veterinarian job is not as easy as professionals show it on their books; the beautiful pictures of cows standing calm waiting for the doctor to attend them were a big lie. He was blaming doctors for not teaching how to look for instruments in the darkness and in small places with a lot of dust. In this chapter, James Herriot fights a battle against a calf that gives him a lot of problems at the time of its born.In the book, James Herriot has many strong characteristics which help him through his tough, and demanding, career. He has a vast knowledge of his practice, as well as his employer and friend, Siegfried Farnon. James Herriot has a great sense of humor, and is able to take embarrassment excellently. He also works well in strange or uncomfortable situations. James Herriot’s most endearing quality is his deep passion and concern for his patients. I thought I had read pretty much read all of James Herriot’s books, so stumbling across this one—and the name didn’t ring a bell—I was all excited about a ‘new’ Herriot. I didn’t even bother to read what it was about. The book “If only they could talk” is the semi autobiographical of real life vet James Herriot. A book about a recently qualified Veterinary Surgeon hardly sounds like a great book, but in its own unique way it is somewhat wonderful. On the other hand, a more optimistic view of the island’s history comes from the archaeologists Terry Hunt of the University of Hawaii and Carl Lipo of California State University Long Beach. They suggest that the inhabitants actually pioneered a type of sustainable farming, building thousands of circular stone walls, called manavai, and gardening inside them. And their theory about how the moai were moved is that they could be ‘walked’ along using a system of only ropes and a few people.

What an endearing bunch of characters. It was a bedtime read, and I realised that every night I was looking forward to going to bed, just so I could read some more.... Siegfried argues with Tristan for arriving at 4 am. Mr. James and Tristan were getting ready to go to a village party; moreover Siegfried said that Tristan must go to see a case of a pig’s ear that was infected. It couldn’t wait longer. Tristan was wearing his best clothes and he had to attend his brother’s command. Siegfried asks for help with the dog to another famous vet in town Mr. Grier. Mr. Grier was known for being one of the roughest veterinarian teachers in town. Forgotten the title or the author of a book? Our BookSleuth is specially designed for you. Visit BookSleuth To be honest, I was quite disappointed by this book. He talks way too much (in my opinion) about the weather, the ongoing discussions between his boss and his brother, their secretary and the animal owners instead of going into more details about treating the animals and the animals themselves, it's all quite superficial to me. I even struggled to finish this book.

Bulls with sunstroke, pigs on the run and a cake-eating Peke with a betting habit . . . I grew up reading James Herriot's book and I'm delighted that thirty years on they are still every bit as charming, heartwarming and laugh-out-loud funny as they were then. (Kate Humble) Example. A teacher asks what i am reading. '1984' i reply, a classic, well known work, and one of George Orwell's greatest pieces. Instead, i vaguely describe of how Tristan has to look after a dog that howls while it is sleeping off its anaesthetic. He gets drunk to numb the pain. James treats Phin Calvert’s calves for lead poisoning with Epsom salts and saves his bull from heatstroke by cooling him with water. It is Tristan rather than Siegfried who has the dog in his room overnight and doesn’t get a wink of sleep.

You have done a great service for us Heriot Fans. I can not recall the source but I distinctly remember reading/hearing that on the 1st series, they had no idea how popular the program would be, so they came out “with all their guns blazing” or some similar expression in what they thought was the only series. The first Polynesians arrived at Rapa Nui (Easter Island), probably by canoe, hundreds of years ago. The island is 2,150 miles west of South America and 1,300 miles east of its nearest inhabited neighbour, Pitcairn. Nowadays 12 flights arrive every week from Chile, Peru and Tahiti. In 2011, 50,000 tourists – ten times the island’s population – flew to Easter Island. Almost all of the jobs on Easter Island depend on tourism. And the tourists go there for only one thing: the moai. James Alfred Wight, the British veterinary surgeon and writer, is renowned for his semi-autobiographical works written under the name ' James Herriot', which chronicle some of the most amusing moments from his life as a veterinarian. His reminiscences as a surgeon are pleasantly mild and warm to read and his style of narration that describe his adventures with the animals and their owners is of the most hilarious form that can make even the most serious of the reader burst out in a laugh. Apart from being incredibly entertaining, Herriot’s books also offer a historical perspective at the practice of veterinary science that was followed in Britain during the time period. James Herriot, or in truth, James Alfred Wright, is a master storyteller, whose ability to paint scenes and emotions with only his words is truly astounding. How anyone can write so elegantly, and truthfully, is a rare and astonishing thing. His memoirs should truly be cherished, this first book setting an excellent scene for many humorous and poignant works.
