We wish the main blade were not serrated. Yes, a serrated edge cuts a few things a little better than a straight edge. But that serrated edge suffers or completely fails to cut other things, especially when it is dulled. Once dull, a serrated edge is more difficult to sharpen, whereas the included sharpener on the Signal could be used to resurface an entirely straight-edged blade. The inclusion of a serrated portion on the blade seems like a marketing move more than a practical one. The Signal is unique and functional. It isn't too huge or too clumsy to use. With it, Leatherman comes another step closer to abandoning their proprietary bit driver interface. They built in the expected "squashed" bit driver, but they also included a standard 1/4 inch drive bit holder. We like this. The standard bit holder isn't oriented in an ideal fashion, but it is better than nothing. For survivalists looking for a multi-tool designed with bushcraft in mind, while also functional around the home, the Signal is a great piece of gear to add to the kit. This multi-tool features tools that are accessible while the tool is in its folded or closed position.

What Other Multi-Tools Should You Consider? I bought my husband and (adult) son one each for Christmas and they were both thrilled. They both had them out all day, admiring the mechanism and trying out the tools. Also both, since then, have been telling me about incidents where they suddenly and unexpectedly need to use it! Sorry this isn't a very technical review but if you're considering giving one as a gift I can see that they were both genuinely pleased. They're both practical people but probably felt buying themselves one was too much of a treat. My son had previously bought himself a cheaper version but said it was terrible and soon broke. These are amazing quality and will obviously be used often. A purpose-built, specialized tool for outdoor adventure and wilderness survival, while also serving purpose around the house We established a list of tasks that every multi-tool on test had to complete. We wanted to see how they performed when trimming finger nails, tape and wrapping paper, when sharpening pencils, when screwing screws into wood, when trimming wire, when opening bottles and cans, when asked to pull bent and twisted nails out of pallets, and when trying to saw metal, plastic and pallets. We found with the SOG PowerAssist, the closer the pliers handles come to one another, the more likely you are to pinch your hand while using them. The Gerber Suspension is best in this respect, with the Victorinox not too far off. Both of these have handles that curve away from one another, leaving plenty of room. Though otherwise very intelligently designed, the Center Drive Plus and SOG PowerAssist have a fair amount of most pinch potential. The Leatherman Charge, Wave+, and Surge all have moderate pinch potential.

What you get is the Wave+ and an excellent value. The Leatherman Wingman is even less expensive, by a significant margin, but has fewer features and is made with lesser quality materials (though most users may not notice the weight savings of steel vs. titanium casing). For a full-featured tool, the Wave+ is the bargain shopper's choice.

Excellent product. Bought 2 as gifts for my son and my son in law. Had then engraved to personalise. Look good. Today's outdoor enthusiasts want to keep weight and volume to a minimum without sacrificing quality and true functionality. Enter the new Skeletool platform.
