About this deal

Mothers and Daughters follows Mum Naomi, her two grown up daughters Martha and Willow, and their partners. Martha and Willow are completely different from each other. Will their differences separate them or can they come together when they need each other most? In The Portable Veblen, thirty-year old Veblen is a resident of Palo Alto and a good-humored daughter to both her mother – a hypochondriac – and her father, who is living in a mental health institution. She’s engaged to be married to the equally amiable Paul – but there’s the small problem of the squirrel nesting in her attic, to which she becomes closely attached. My mother belonged to that group of low IQ individuals who find everything alarming and believe that raising your voice is the most effective form of communication.” This morning we were spreading the Christmas cheer at the HQ offices and giving away copies of @SarahMorgan_'s #TheChristmasBookClub! 🎄☕⭐

Having a little girl has been like following an old treasure map with the important paths torn away.” One example. Here’s a scene we’ve all encountered in some story or another. This is Evan Hunter’s rendition:

Where’d You Go Bernadette by Maria Semple

The author grew up in Alabama in the same town in which this novel is set. So perhaps it is “auto-fiction” – autobiography disguised as fiction. It matters not. This is a remarkable and earnest exploration of childhood faith and the cold harsh realities of adulthood. In wrestling with suffering and fighting quite hard to hold onto hope, in Gifty we have a heroine who embodies what it means to want to believe in a world that seems determined to extinguish the small flame of hope lit inside her as a child. And her triumph becomes ours. Evan Hunter was a professional writer, and I say that with the utmost respect. He wrote for a living. For money. Using several pseudonyms he wrote over a hundred novels from mainstream pop to police procedural to porn. His prose is truly the work of a pro: easily readable, no showing off. I love this guy. As the story developed, I grew to like the characters more and more. I could not foresee how the story would progress and liked how the narrative shifted mostly between the three women. It was a lovely family drama that rests on the importance of communication and this evolves over the story. At the beginning, there is a lot of distance between the family but by the closing, events have occurred that makes them even stronger as a family unit. I really enjoyed this book. The cover was the first thing which made me want to read it and it is the perfect introduction to the beautiful story. Mothers and Daughters is another excellent read from the pen of Erica James. I was so involved, I was talking to the characters, telling them what they should or shouldn’t do! I wasn’t too fussed on Martha to start with, but she grew on me – Willow was a delight, although she let herself be walked over. And Naomi was pretty much perfect – secrets and all! Mothers and Daughters is a novel I highly recommend.

Even though I was raised as a Southern Methodist with a grandfather a minister (so a strict home life) and have always thought of myself as practicing Christian, I have to say Shannon Bream’s newest book is absolutely wonderful!!!! Elizabeth and Mary - Bream explained their relationship in a way that I had not gone deep enough to understand, before. The author also convincingly captured the range of emotions and tensions which can arise when a widowed parent begins a new relationship, only to find their happiness threatened by disapproval from adult offspring. Without introducing any spoilers by giving examples, there were moments when I found myself feeling furious with Martha’s controlling, manipulative behaviour as she attempted to derail her mother’s relationship with Ellis! Mother was comfort. Mother was home. A girl who lost her mother was suddenly a tiny boat on an angry ocean. Some boats eventually floated ashore. And some boats, like me, seemed to float farther and farther from land” Andie slammed the car door. "You know what I'd like for Christmas, Flo? Boundaries. You can gift me early if you'd like.” If you're looking for a devotional, or even just to broaden your understanding of the Bible I'd definitely recommend either The Women of the Bible Speak: The Wisdom of 16 Women and Their Lessons for Today or The Mothers and Daughters of the Bible Speak: Lessons on Faith from Nine Biblical Families :) A touching and honest portrayal of a mother and her two daughters dealing with that thing called life.
