About this deal

The Quilted Northern is the only triple-ply toilet paper we tested, and it really is ultra-plush. On the durability side of things, however, the paper didn’t stay intact as well as the top Charmin options did. Although it held together well on the coarse surface, it didn’t hold up perfectly on the everyday tests. It also took a minute and forty seconds to dissolve in water, making it the second longest dissolving product in our list behind Charmin Essentials. Update: Since we reviewed tp in 2018, many brands have entered the market with 100% bamboo toilet paper such as Reel Paper, Who Gives A Crap, Tushy, and Caboo to name a few. As do many eco-friendlier options, bamboo tp carries quite the premium compared to standard tp. Though all the brands highlight it being a sustainable option, there are subtle differences in sheet size, roll size, with one brand even offering an unbleached option. We’ve tested a few of these but given the current shortage of tp, we will have to wait to give you a full update. Absorbency: We individually immerse five sheets of each type of toilet paper in water to measure the amount of fluid each sheet is capable of absorbing. Chlorine Free” – Rodale’s Organic Life warns us that this is an empty label and likely means that the paper is PCF, or more likely ECF. Just because chlorine gas wasn’t used in processing, doesn’t mean it is free of chlorine derivatives. Surprisingly, it also scored the highest marks in the dry lint test. The wet lint test didn’t fare as well. The smooth face of the sheet along with the slight paper-like quality meant there was less to drag, until it was soaked with moisture.

According to the EPA, if everyone in the US swapped one single roll of regular TP for recycled TP, the US would save 470,000 trees, 1.2 million cubic feet of landfill space and 169 million gallons of water Kimberly-Clark, the makers of Cottonelle and Scott products, boasts about their signature ripple texture and claims it cleans more effectively. They use a patented technology that dries paper without embossing or compressing it, allowing the paper to retain its ripples when wet. Recycled paper vs. new paper pulp Again, we couldn’t find any formal statements about formaldehyde-urea resins or newer PAE compounds that release by-products like MCPDs. Solenis explains in technical detail the development of “wet strength resin” used in the papermaking process to strengthen wet paper, and it seems clear that PAE has replaced formaldehyde-urea as the resin of choice, but that just means there are new byproducts to be monitored.Cottonelle takes the crown, narrowly beating runner-ups Quilted Northern and Charmin – Ultra Strong when we combined both lab tests and user surveys. Cottonelle – Ultra ComfortCare tied with Quilted Northern Ultra Plush in multiple categories like wet strength, absorption, dry lint and width, but user surveys pushed the final score over the top. Even though Quilted Northern beat Cottonelle in the lab tests, the lead in our user surveys tipped the scales in Cottonelle’s favor.

The danger of BPA in recycled toilet paper has been de-bunked by experts who cite that receipt paper is the real danger, containing a thousand times more BPA than toilet paper. In comparison, toilet paper contains only microns. This article was written by GH Institute Textiles Lab executive director Lexie Sachs, who holds a B.S. in fiber science from Cornell University and has more than 15 years of experience in the textiles industry, including merchandising and product development for home products. Lexie joined Good Housekeeping in 2013 and has tested all kinds of paper products, including toilet paper. For this article, Lexie conducted extensive evaluations of more than 20 different types of toilet paper from popular name and generic brands. If you value the integrity of your TP, then this definitely meets the mark. It leaves no residue behind, though it does sacrifice some softness. Intuitive assessments of function and value validate our mathematical approach and vice versa. What we propose with the use of our proprietary "Effectiveness Coefficient" isn't inherently unique, nor is it fully necessary. Critical thinking and actual value-oriented use of toilet tissue will support many of the same conclusions we have made mathematically. Strength Strength is another characteristic you’ll want to see in a good toilet paper. You don’t want paper that easily breaks apart when dry, or you’ll end up using twice as much of it just to get clean. Some brands are actually 2-ply, and because they’re so strong, you’ll actually use four times less of their toilet paper to do the same job as regular toilet paper.

We split our testing into two main components: Lab Tests and User Test Surveys. Lab tests consist of objective measurements and grading to test for physical quality of each brand. Our surveyors took the rolls into real life testing, collecting a swath of subjective scores from our panel. Lab tests Rubbing a single square of toilet paper over a cast iron pan helped us test for strength and durability. How We Tested Toilet Paper It is no less white in color than its virgin competitors, though it’s PCF (Processed Chlorine-Free) with oxygen based bleaches instead of the ultra-harmful chloride bleaches used for virgin paper processing. The latter releases carcinogenic dioxins into the environment, one of the most toxic chemicals on earth. The chlorine dioxide bleach used to process virgin-paper varieties is notoriously harmful to the environment, ranking in the top 10% of hazardous compounds in the US. While there are countless articles about the toxicity of chlorine in virgin paper products, we could not find an exact figure for how much of it is left in the final product. In line with their unspoken motto that “bigger is better and cheaper,” the Kirkland Signature toilet paper rolls are the biggest of all the other finalists at 11cm width. While virtually almost every other manufacturer has shrunken their rolls steadily over the years, Kirkland Signature has not. As one would expect from a softer tissue, the breakage and lint factor is higher which explains some point loss in our tester surveys. Quilted Northern just may be too delicate for more aggressive wiping techniques, working better for those with a lighter, dabbing method. In addition, users may need more sheets to compensate for linting, even though it scores very high in absorption. However, there is nothing more luxurious than excess. We then layer together five sheets of toilet paper and place them in our Instron machine, which pulls the toilet paper apart to measure its tensile strength. The Instron machine is also used to evaluate perforation strength (shown here), or how easy it is to tear the perforated portion of the toilet paper. For wet strength, we use our Instron machine and a Finch Cup to wet the toilet paper while it's pulled apart. Charmin Ultra Soft is the best of both worlds - it's soft and strong. You'll feel comfortable and won't have to worry about a mess on your hands.
