You can choose from many types of resistance tubes in nearly any sporting goods store. In general, the lighter the color of the tubing, the lighter the resistance. Likewise, the darker the tubing, or the shorter you make the tubing, the greater the resistance.

What types of resistance bands are there?

A highly adaptable piece of kit that is simple to use and store away thanks to its compact size. They may support you as you do pull-ups, provide more resistance for weighted exercises, or even serve as weights themselves by being pulled and stretched in numerous ways. With the band secured around chest height, stand facing away from the door and hold the handles with your arms splayed outwards. Now stretch the band by bringing your hands together at your centreline without bending your arms.

Flat resistance bands, on the other hand, come sans handles, and finish a complete loop like a giant elastic band. The third kind, though similar to this type, are much smaller and go by the name of mini resistance bands. Hold the band crossed over as shown and drop into a squat position. Then drive yourself up and at the same time push your hands up until they’re fully extended overhead. Try to coordinate your arms and legs so this is done in one smooth movement.

Our tester experienced no punctures while using the Smart tube, but that might just have been the Puncture Fairy looking the other way for a few weeks. Sealants are a better solution. Preparations such as Slime contain small rubber particles suspended a liquid that dries on exposure to air. It’s pretty effective at sealing holes up to about 3mm across. However, it’s hard to squeeze a sealant through a standard Presta valve so sealant makers offer tubes with the fluid already inside. If you want to roll your own, then you want tubes with removable valve cores. With feet together, stand on the band and hold the handles in front of you. Stand facing away from the door with the anchor secured at mid-height. Get into a solid stance with one foot forward, holding the handles at shoulder level with some tension in the band. Push both handles forward until your arms are fully extended. Stand in the middle of the band with feet shoulder width apart. Bring the handles up to ear-level, palms facing up. A carry bag is also useful if you’re planning on taking your resistance bands on the road and you can get ankle straps to attach the bands to, which again increases the range of exercises you can do. It’s worth buying a few bands and progressing through the levels of resistance, making this set just right, and will work for strength workouts as well as rehab and stretching. Resistance Bands

Secure the band high up on the door frame and hold both handles, standing side on to the door. Using your oblique abdominal muscles, pull the bands down and away from the door in a downward chopping motion. As well as using the tubes individually, you can clip multiple tubes to the handles to add extra resistance (eg. by clipping a 10lb and 25lb tube together, you can create 55lb of resistance). On a pump that does not have a length of hose, and needs considerable speed and effort to use, it is highly unlikely that users will avoid breaking valve stems, yet the screw on valves are very easy to unscrew with the likes of a Lyzene pump. Latex inner tubes have been claimed to be more puncture-resistant, because the rubber is inherently stretchier. Whether that makes a difference on the road is debatable as a tube held in place by a tyre may not be able t stretch as much as a tube being pressed against a broken bottle in an advert. For everyday riding you probably don’t want fewer punctures to come at the expense of daily inflation anyway.
