Unfortunately, given the timing (summer) and location (Front Range of Colorado) of my reviewing for the Supercross, I have not encountered any mud, but an educated guess is that the Supercross would be better in mud specifically, however the XA Elevate (and X Alpine Pro) have superior wet traction, so would consider what comes after or intermittently with the muddy sections. Boasting maximum cushioning and GORE-TEX to keep the wet out, the Salomon Supercross 3 is a great option for a lighter trail run that doesn't require too much protection from loose and uneven ground. The flexible construction is exactly the type of composition you want in trail shoes; your feet will move in directions based on the terrain you encounter. I was bowled over by the appearance of the Salomon Supercross 3 gtx; they are a really attractive shoe that doesn't have too much bulk.

The breathable uppers provide your foot with flexibility, a feature I find to be most endearing in running shoes. It's a more comfortable ride for your foot which gives you that better feeling with every stride, especially on trail runs that are harsher on your feet. You can see the massive difference between the height of the foam underfoot in the forefoot and the heel. The heel is very protective, while the forefoot is rather sensitive. You can also see that while there are a lot of overlays on the upper, the crease point on the forefoot is left exposed to abrasion and early tearing. The EnergyCell Midsole used for the Salomon Supercross 3 is a famous kit that Salomon often uses in their hikers and trail runners. This multi-functional EVA Foam Midsole provides a mixture of comfort and protection. I have the XA Elevate and I am looking for another pair as winter shoes with better grip in the wet/mud/snow. I was first considering the Speedcross 5 but the Supercross seems a good option.A robust and aggressive grip makes it easy to dig into dirt safely whilst providing all the flexibility needed for ground feel and plenty of push-ups. Trail running needs a secure shoe that isn't slippy or sloppy, and the Supercross 3 provides an incredibly personalized fit with the use of SensiFit™ technology and a snug heel fit. You won't need to worry about your laces coming loose. The Salomon Supercross 3 GTX benefits from laces that will keep your foot stable and secure with every stride.

In addition, Salomon class this as a regular cushioned shoe, so although it is comfortable, it may not provide you with the extreme comfort to keep off soreness and fatigue from multi-day trips. The first noticeable thing about the Supercross 3 is the commanding grip that uses distinct and comprehensive lugs that sink into the ground with confidence and reassurance. Flexibility and responsiveness are never affected by the grip, with plenty of push-off for those times when you need a helping hand.Jeff: Aside from a few minor limitations, such a foothold, warm upper, no lace garage or Endofit, I find the Supercross to be an excellent addition to the Salomon line up in that it is a very fairly priced shoe with enough performance, comfort, traction, durability and versatility to satisfy a wide variety of runners and hikers who are looking for maximum value. Another thing you may want to consider is that they are best used one or less per week so I wouldn't have them as you're daily running shoe.

The shoes upper felt a little bit chilly on the cold days I had it out, but it is December in Montana, so go figure. A very aggressive sole allows for some semi-rugged trail running but does not deter a leisurely run around an urban trail area. The shoe is lightweight for a trail runner, has a responsive feel, and boasts a comfortable fit. The tongue is connected to the upper on both sides which keeps the tongue centered and keeps debris out, It also adds to the overall look of the shoe.

The upper is fabric and is injected with lateral bands of smooth rubber that tie into the reinforced rubber of the lacing system. These created a strong girdle of support around the foot without adding a bunch of unnecessary weight. The padding of the sole is most aggressive in the heel and as perfectly suited for those heel strikers out there. This is essential for trail running as fast feet need snug shoes. The Salomon Supercross 3 GTX is an excellent choice for a lighter trail running shoe, It's got all the features that will enhance your performance and give you an exceptional run. I'm always a fan of the materials Salomon use, with their skill and expertise showing through the quality choice of material. A protect rubber toe cap and rubber sole allows for easier, securer running plus more comfort. Durability is evident through the ripstop upper, a material known for its durability and resistance to scratches.
