About this deal

You’d expect that a book called Silence would be about, well, silence, wouldn’t you? While Silence in the age of noise certainly explores the idea of silence, it doesn’t focus on the idea in the way you might expect. The philosopher and "boredom theorist" Blaise Pascal wrote of our discomfort with silence that "All of humanity's problems stem from man's inability to sit quietly in a room alone." Kagge notes that Pascal wrote this in the 1600s. Which is to say, sometime before the advent of television, social media, and all those other instruments of distraction that exist today. Humanity, in other words, has always had a hard time being quiet. Sitting there at the dinner table, I suddenly remembered their curiosity as children. How they would wonder about what might be hiding behind a door. Their amazement as they stared at a light switch and asked me to “open the light”. Which is pretty bold, when you think about it. He could sell a lot of books merely sharing some of his unusual and exotic tales of adventure. But he doesn’t do that here. He is wagering this book on his ability to share himself at the most intimate level.

After a few minutes of walking, Kagge answered that it was worthwhile following trails in the forest, or somewhere similar where the trail wasn't always clear but full of roots and obstacles that required one's full attention to avoid stumbling. You'll be so occupied watching where you step, Kagge’s reasoning went, that you won't have time to think about other things. Norwegian explorer Erling Kagge, who has voyaged to the South Pole all alone, on the importance of finding silence...

The Telegraph values your comments but kindly requests all posts are on topic, constructive and respectful. Please review our On a sailing trip in the spring of 1986, pushing towards Cape Horn off the coast of Chile in the South Pacific Ocean, I was reminded of this. Early one morning, while alone on night watch between midnight and 4am, the world was dead silent. But then, I heard a sound that seemed like a long, deep breath just west of the boat. I had no idea what it could be. I turned 90 degrees in the direction of the sound and spotted a whale just off the starboard side. A mere calling distance away. Behind a cacophony of traffic noise, iPhone alerts and our ever-spinning thoughts, an elusive notion - silence - lies in wait. But what really is silence? Where can it be found? And why is it more important now than ever? I prepared myself well but was, as I often am, nervous beforehand. What if scattered thoughts about silence belonged only in the realm of Sunday dinners, and not in student forums? It was not that I expected to be booed for the 18 minutes of my lecture, but I wanted the students to be interested in the subject I held so close to my heart.

By ethics, Wittgenstein means the very meaning of life. Not even science is able to find words for something like that. ‘Ethics so far as it springs from the desire to say something about the ultimate meaning of the life, the absolute good, the absolute valuable, can be no science.’ It must be shown, thought and felt.”Brighton The alternative is to not think anything at all. You may call this meditation, yoga, mindfulness or merely common sense. It can be good. I take pleasure in meditating and practising yoga. I’ve also taken up the cousin to this practice – hypnosis – and hypnotised myself for 20 minutes to disconnect. That also works well. I lie there hovering a couple of centimetres above my bed each afternoon. This isn't a very long book and is more of a series of vignettes by the author on silence. There are 33 sections, with each like a separate essay. If you are someone who already values the essentials of silence, this will probably not add anything that you don't already know. However, they were quite meditative and reflective and I enjoyed the additional perspective on why we need to pursue silence in this age of constant noise and information. The pictures of artwork reflecting "silence" add to the meditations on silence by the author. Where fear is ever present you will never tire of pleasure in the relationship. It sounds brutal, but Stendhal is right. Life is brutal. I am living dangerously when I take a relationship for granted. Most people think climbing Everest is very risky, but things usually work out. However, taking reciprocal love for granted – I would never dare do that.” Not long ago, I tried convincing my three daughters that the world’s secrets are hidden inside silence. We were sitting around the kitchen table eating Sunday dinner. Nowadays, it is a rare occurrence for us to eat a meal together; so much is going on all the other days of the week. Sunday dinners have become the one time when we all remain seated and talk, face to face.

I believe silence is the new luxury. Silence is more exclusive and long lasting than other luxuries. I estimated that the creature was as long as our boat, about 65ft (19m). Judging from its length, I supposed that it was a fin whale, a cosmopolitan mammal on a lifelong hunt for crabs, krill and fish. Blue whales are about the same size, but as we have managed to nearly exterminate them, I figured the odds of the world’s largest animal swimming alongside us to be rather slim. Erling Kagge, the Norwegian adventurer and polymath, once spent fifty days walking solo in Antarctica with a broken radio. In this meditative, charming and surprisingly powerful book, he explores the power of silence and the importance of shutting out the world. Whether you're in deep wilderness, taking a shower or on the dance floor, you can experience perfect stillness if you know where to look. And from it grows self-knowledge, gratitude, wonder and much more. Have you ever read a book that resonated with you more so than usual because you read it at the right time in your life? For me, this was that book. At the time of reading it, I've been laid up for 6 weeks after ankle surgery which has given me more than enough time to think about what sort of direction I want for 2018. As someone that's always enjoyed time alone but makes a living from the internet, finding silence within noise is something that's important to me...and I've never read a better approach on the matter than this book.

This is a book about stillness, about quiet, about finding an escape from the endless babble of noise and chaos that is our digital life. And in that moment, find the ability to look inwards again, rather than ever outwards. The lost stillness of life In 1993, Norwegian explorer Erling Kagge spent fifty days walking solo across Antarctica, becoming the first person to reach the South Pole alone, accompanied only by a radio whose batteries he had removed before setting out. In this book. an astonishing and transformative meditation, Kagge explores the silence around us, the silence within us, and the silence we must create. By recounting his own experiences and discussing the observations of poets, artists, and explorers, Kagge shows us why silence is essentialto sanity and happiness—and how it can open doors to wonder and gratitude. Sesle birlikte sessiz kalabilmek demek. In a way, silence is the opposition to all of this. It’s about getting inside what you are doing. Experiencing rather than overthinking. Allowing each moment to be big enough. Not living through other people and other things. Shutting out the world and fashioning your own silence whenever you run, cook food, have sex, study, chat, work, think of a new idea, read or dance.” Silence In The Age of Noise is a collection of thoughts on the matter - some more profound than others, but all make clear the overarching point. There's something powerful to be gained from finding the quiet within ourselves.
