About this deal

If you’re mounting your curtain rod near the ceiling, leave a few inches of space between the rod and the ceiling.

Even if you’re using a sewing machine, you’re still going to need a handheld needle and thread. Handheld needles let you make very precise stitches, which is a must in almost every sewing project, including this one! As mentioned above, you want fabric that’s at least eight inches longer and four inches wider than the window. If you’re using fabric you bought from a fabric store, trim the selvedge first, which is the parts of the fabric at the edge that have the manufacturer information; they’re there to make sure the actual fabric doesn’t fray, but you’re not going to need it. If possible, you should pin the hem and hang the curtain just to make sure you are happy with the length. The hem is nice and wide, so you can easily make an adjustment. For extra stability, place 1 pin on either side of the eyelet hole while you trace and cut out the hole.Be careful not to cut past the line or you’ll end up with holes that are too big for the eyelet rings. Curtains are one of the easiest and most useful things to make: it can be very difficult to find just the right curtains for your windows, and making them yourself means you can make them exactly to your own personal preference. Create a deep double-folded hem at the bottom of the curtain panel. Fold the cut bottom edge towards the wrong side of the fabric by 2 in (5.1 cm) so that the raw edges are hidden. Use an iron to press along the fold. Then turn up the new, folded bottom edge by another 10 in (25 cm). Pin the hem in place and secure it with a machine straight stitch. You can find fabric at special stores that specifically sell hundreds of types of fabric, or you may have fabric already in your home; even old bedsheets can be used if they’re big enough! The weights you’re going to want to use are specifically called drapery weights, and you can find them at craft stores. Always make your lining shorter than your fabric. Curtains can expand and contract with changes in temperature, and you don’t want the lining poking out the bottom (which happened at my parents’ place!). The best fabrics for sheer curtains are cotton voile, polyester voile, lace, and muslin. Many of these fabrics are harder to sew, so don't choose these if you are a beginner. How to Make Curtains - Sheer Curtains Let in the Light How to Make Regular Curtains That little bit of straight line sewing and time investment will give you a curtain that’ll last for years in your home. And since you have to look at it hanging on your window for years to come, do it the right way with a sewing machine! *end rant*Start stitching the tape across the top of the curtain close to the top edge of the tape. When you get close to the end, cut off the tape a couple inches past the second side. With right sides together (and making sure half widths line up where applicable), pin the main fabric and lining fabric together. With the side edges flush, move the bottom of the lining up half an inch from the bottom of the curtain before you start pinning, in effect making the linings a little shorter than the curtains. Add about 10″ to your vertical measurement. That’ll give you plenty of space for hems and in case your fabric got cut unevenly.

Remove the straight pins and repeat with the other side hems — one on this curtain panel, and two on the other. Step Three: Top Hems Now that you have all your materials, let’s get started! Stitch across the bottom of the hem to form a casing. The final part of learning how to make curtains is doing the hem at the bottom. On the wrong side, press up the hem by 3 inches (7.5cm) and then 3 inches (7.5cm) a second time to form a double hem. Stitch across the top of the hem.Next look at the cut end of the fabric. Is it even between the selvages? If not, cut a straight line that’s perpendicular to the top edges of the selvage ends. Repeat for the other end of your fabric. Iron all your seams flat.Ironing your seams will make your curtain panels look so much nicer. It’s worth the extra work!
