About this deal

This is my first over-ear audiophile headphone (well, not my first but for mainly music, this is my first) ever to buy and i didnt actually expected that if i didnt lost my AKG... The HD681 EVO output what the music gives it to work with. The soundstage is neither expansive nor cramped. The sound is presented as if it’s coming from a mid-sized indoor concert with speakers surrounding me, intimate but never congested. The impressive thing about the soundstage is the accuracy in which the music is delivered and the sense of space the instruments have. The sound is all around my head, very 3d like in how it’s being presented to me. My go to corded headphones. This is my second pair of Superlux HD681s. Bought my first 5 years ago and they are still working. Superlux and Artist Guitars for the win again offering Australian consumers incredible value for money. I also bought 381 some time ago and from the moment i started listening to them i had a feeling of very high, sharp trebles, almost to the point that I had to adjust the volume everytime there were trebles or vocals. But i fixed it with an EQ, and its not a problem to do the same on PC. Yes, the design has been copied from AKG, however, it doesn’t mean that the build quality also matches AKG. Nearly every part feels cheaper and the cable is integrated, not user detachable.

The Superlux HD681 are actually a “series” line of 3 different sub-models with, supposedly, specific tuning; this series are much like the Superlux HD381 Series, Superlux HD662 Series. The 3 flavors that this line offers are (quoting Superlux’s product descriptions): Scary Monsters and Nice Sprites (Skrillex): The high-pitched beginning synth is downright painful due to its harshness. The drums sound wonderful, and unsurprisingly, the bass drop is detailed and transparent. Some of the high-pitched parts of the drop are a bit fatiguing. Vocals sound a bit crisp, but are clear and pleasant. The HD681 features an exceptionally deep low frequency. As for the sound image presented by these headphones, the HD681 gives you the feeling of actually being on stage with the artists. Enough blabbering - these headphones are absolutely worth the price. The sound is pretty clear and the phones are comfortable to wear. They are a little bass heavy though so keep that in mind if you are considering between these and some other ones. But for my purpose, casual music listening while in work, they are just perfect. They are semi-open, but I'd be ready to call them open. It's good when someone tries to reach out from outside as they don't need to shout. On the other hand they are massive enough to be seen so other understand that they might need to raise voice — good perk compared to earphones. In the case of 668B, relative to the normal 681 it has to do mostly with the treble. The 668B has a bit less treble emphasis and more prominent lower midrange. The end result being a bit warmer and more balanced sound. If you can live with that and can EQ them to your taste, they'll probably make a better choice for your music. Further the "lingering around bass" i didnt feel on first glimpse, but the above thread poster might have simply better ears for that or spent more time with them.

Overall these headphones are sooooo worth the money, the sound quality is superb, and listening to songs sounds great. If you were to use these for long periods of time they may become a bit uncomfortable for your ears, especially big ones, but I can't complain because of the budget-friendly price. Thanks, Superlux! As you can see if you EQ the treble peak as per Rtings you will still have harshness as in that case you do not compensate what needs to be compensated. It is the reason why I think one should not EQ above 4kHz on measurements made with a HATS.

HD681's, Great sound and seperation of high and low frequencies. Quite comfy for big earmuffs/caps and a nice long lead. Moreover, the large, “cushiony” and leather (maybe leather) earpads supplement their excellent level of comfort offered with also a pivoting movement that adapts them better to your heads/ears shape. The headband’s clamping has a well-balanced pressure to provide a tight but not crushing fit and the single-sided robust cable reduces cumbersome cable-issues.

NOTE: There are two released editions of this headphone. The first has brightly colored red accents. The second released one has darker maroon accents and the highs have been subdued quite a bit and are more tolerable now but sound the same otherwise. I don't believe they sell the original anymore. Wow...Great headphones. I use them playing my Roland e-drums and they just sound so amazing in them. For the price I would highly recommend these headphones. Buying another one soon. The bass response is significantly reduced and that, in my mind, is the star attraction of a 681 in the first place. Well, actually, after a bit more hours, i just realised, the mid part is just, well, "audiable". is just a bit more than enough but not in a way of satisfying mids. The self-adjusting headband of the Superlux HD681 offers an oustanding level of comfort. This design is inspired by the headbands of AKG headphones , which AKG has been using for decades already. The reduced amount of material needed to construct the headband results in a cumulative lighter weight of the headphone as a whole. No, the difference is not big. However, the 668B sounds a bit more balanced and warmer, at least for my taste. These head phones are amzing for the price! Bought them for my helix LT and im stoked with the results. Unbeatable thanks artist guitars The highs are very well done, I can find no flaw in the upper regions at all. Horns sound incredibly clear with no grain and excellent extension. I feel as if the highs have hit their stride, there is no strain here at all. Simply clean and balanced nicely throughout. This is my fourth pair. I use them for monitoring in my studio, mainly because they have such a fantastic neutral sound....

The Superlux HD681 highs are superb bright and detailed, a “treble-head” dream come true… bringing some memories of in-ear headphones like the Senfer 4in1. Hats off for Superlux’s little monstrous creation. Running the Superlux HD681 through our extreme bass tests they took up to 40% of a Fiio E12 Mont Blanc maximum power (custom basshead EQ, high gain, bass boost) with a huge increment of mid-bass punch and sub-bass that will offer a delicate but clearly perceptible basshead rumble on your cheek bones. To reach this it was necessary to push them to their limits (as we always do in this section), anything below this high-risk levels did not provide any rumble. Regarding sound quality, their sub-bass became distorted on and beyond 40% amplification. Do not expect the basshead rumble and impact that the Beats Solo2 achieved during our Beats Solo2 review. Highs: Here was where I could really hear this thing had only cost me €19,95 ! Too much highs ! Harsh highs ! Non-musical highs... really not good in this department. It sound like it has its own treble boost build in. So I definetly cal the highs "harsh". AKG K240 s are very comfortable, maybe even the most comfortable headphones below €100, so are HD 681s the same? Not really, but the difference isn’t massive. The main distinction lies with the earpads that may look nearly identical, but are less plush on HD 681 and if your ears are prone to sweating when using headphones, things can get sweaty pretty fast. Also the headband is a bit stiffer, but it’s not that big of a deal. Most of our testers still found them to be comfy enough.EVO pleather pads seem to be a bit different to the originals and coupled with the new design of the headphone, they seem to be slightly more comfortable. The Superlux HD681 mids have clear lower mids and lower vocals with nice warmth and good enough higher-mids crispness. There is no muffle sound at all but some highly demanding listeners could want to apply a little bump to their lower vocals, if you want to fine tune it you can apply an EQ aimed to “fix” this. The upper range of their mids are well resolved without getting harsh nor sounding rolled-off or shy. The bass goes nice and low with adequate impact. Not too much to say about the mids. These things have too much in the high-end. They can be pretty shrill at times though a bit though an EQ helped a lot.
