As the story proceeds we see many magical adventures. Each one is designed by Merlyn to give the Wart a carefully calculated lesson. For his first lesson, they are standing on a bridge above the castle’s moat. The Wart wishes aloud that he were a fish, so Merlyn turns him into a fish, and himself into a large, wise-looking tench, in the moat. A roach asks them to see a weak fish who is ill, and although Merlyn thinks she is making it up, he cures her all the same. Merlyn’s compassion toward the roach teaches The Wart that even the smallest creatures deserve help, however silly it might seem. Sometimes, I choose the next book I am going to read based on the sound of the narrator's voice. That was the case with this book. It was the middle of the night and I couldn't relax enough to go to sleep, so, I listened to excerpts from my queue of audiobooks. I was looking for a narrator that had a pleasant voice that I could relax to, as the story unwound. Neville Jason does a wonderful job of narrating all the characters and is lovely to listen to.After Kay and The Wart finish helping the work in the fields, they go to practise their falconry. They take a tiercel goshawk called “Cully” from the Mews, and head out into the fields. The Wart is better at handling Cully, but Kay is proud, and aware of his station. He insists on carrying the hawk, and he releases him far too son, hoping that he will catch a rabbit. Cully, however has his own ideas, and flies into a nearby tree instead, perching there, glaring at them, before flying deeper and deeper into the forest. We see The Wart’s empathy contrasting with Kay’s arrogance, as The Wart worries about Hob, who takes care of the hawks. He knows that Hob will be disappointed to have lost Cully, but Kay does not care. He says that Hob is just a servant, and he storms off.

Wart and Merlyn return to Ector's castle, and the wizard becomes the boys' tutor. He pays special attention to Wart. Merlyn turns him into a fish, and together they explore the castle's moat. In one of their excursions, the boys and Merlyn encounter Little John, who leads them to Robin Hood (referred to as Robin Wood) and Marian. Their extended stay with Robin culminates in an encounter with a griffin. Kay manages to slay the beast, taking its head as a trophy. During the fray, the griffin breaks the Wart's collar bone.Wart is the main character of the story and eventually becomes King Arthur. The foster son of a wealthy lord, he feels frustrated that he will never be a knight like his companion Kay. Under Merlyn's tutelage he learns valuable lessons that make him a suitable future monarch. He is depicted as having altruistic motives, while sometimes being naive about the selfishness of the people around him. I'm the sort that likes to get immersed in my fantasy. I want to feel like I'm in that world. So, when a ghost knight is questing after a mythical beast and out of nowhere the author is talking about police officers it breaks up my willing suspension of disbelief. Funny, I know, that something that's real should ruin my belief of something fake. It worked so well in Python's "The Holy Grail"...
