About this deal

The 70-300 VC will show some flare if a bright light is in the frame, but the amount of flare is not unusual. Narrowing the aperture a bit lessens the effect, but you'll want to go down to f/11 to get off-center results that show good resolution. Compare this with the Sony FE 70-300mm—we've not had a chance to test it on the a7R IV, but with the 42MP a7R II it captures photos with much more consistently good resolution from center to edge. The focusing ring is about 3/4'' wide, also rubber with ribs. The focusing ring ends at soft stops at the close-focus and infinity focus points, and will focus past infinity. Chromatic aberration is noticeable at the longer focal lengths and in the corners, but is no issue at shorter focal lengths and in the center. The big problem of my copy is strong purple fringing at high contrast edges. Just one other reviewer noted this in this forum, so I assume that this could be a specific problem of my copy. I did not notice any distortion, vignetting or flare that is worth mentioning. Build-quality is acceptable for amateur-use. Focusing is slow at times but always accurate and I noticed occasional hunting at low-light.

We spent 2 hours in the store making detailed comparisons using my MacBook (with 2 other guys in the shop offering very valued, experienced but un-biased opinion) including making crops of each image. On all settings, the Tamron edged out the Canon 70-300 fairly easily, and the Canon was excellent to start with! Against the 70-200 F4L, the Tamron loses slightly when wide open, but once stopped down to F5.6/8 the differences were extremely hard to find, with the Tamron only losing marginally at the corners. In several of the images I took, we really couldn't tell any difference between the Tamron and the Canon L - it even came to the point that we couldn't remember which images were from which lens, they were that close.Experience the excitement of bringing distant subjects closer as well as the perspective flattering characteristics achieved by full-scale telephoto photography more easily than ever before. For landscapes, sports, birds and wildlife as well as closer subjects such as portraits and street scenes, this lens expands the range of telephoto photography. Focus accuracy and repeatability is critical to consistently produce sharp shots. Repeatability (the accuracy of focus on the same subject after repeated focus-acquisition) of the Tamron 70-300mm f4.5-6.3 Di III is very good (measured 98.7% in Reikan FoCal) with no outliers over a series of 40 shots. The lens focuses in around 0.5 sec from infinity at 200mm focal length to 2.17m (1:10 magnification), which is similar to the Z-Nikkor 100-400 but a bit slower than the F-Nikkor 70-300 (on a D810).

A travel-friendly lens that also makes a good lightweight walkabout zoom, the Tamron 70-300mm is remarkably lightweight as well as being very simple to use. It pairs well with all but the earliest full-frame Sony E-mount full-frame cameras, as later models feature IBIS. The lens would also be worthy of consideration for Sony’s APS-C format E-mount bodies, but relatively few of these have IBIS, making consistently sharp handheld shooting difficult to achieve. Sharpness itself is mostly excellent in the centre of the frame but drops off towards the edges and corners. On balance, it’s a good lens that’s well worth the asking price, but it’s less impressive than other recent Tamron E-mount optics.

While the USD focus speed is fast (but not the fastest), we can still hear the focus noise. In contrast, Canon USM is near silence. The VC is extremely powerful. It seems to me that the stabilization effect is even better than Canon’s IS and Nikon’s VR.

Sit down young-un, and let grand-pa here tell you about a time, long, long ago, before your fancy digital type cameras, where you had this stuff called "film" that the photons embedded into. Do you believe that we didn't have any fancy pancy IS in those days? To make the 300mm telephoto focal length more fun and accessible, TAMRON focused intently on designing a telephoto zoom lens that's both small and lightweight. Turning the conventional concept of a telephoto lens on its head, the 70-300mm F4.5-6.3 is only 148mm (5.8 in) in length with a maximum diameter of 77mm and a weight of just 545g (19.2 oz). This gives users the freedom to concentrate fully on shooting without worrying about lens size or weight. In addition to those wishing to pursue real telephoto shooting for the first time, the lens is also recommended for people who use cameras that have built-in image stabilization because they can leave the tripod at home. Of special significance, when paired with the APS-C mirrorless cameras, this zoom adds additional telephoto reach and while remaining comfortable to handle. Users can enjoy shooting with even higher power telephoto effects at a maximum equivalent focal length of approximately 450mm 3. To Connect your PC and lens, use the TAMRON Connection Cable (USB Type-A to Type-C/Model CC-150, or USB Type-C to Type-C/Model CC-350) sold separately. While it is for a different mount (they have not done other mounts yet), it is more comparable to the similarly priced Nikon AF-P 70-300 f/4.5 to f/5.6 VR (full frame version of the lens)there is always the possibility that a DSLR body might not support a (likely older) third party lens.

DPReview TV: Tamron 70-300 F4.5-6.3 review

At 70mm f/4.5, the pair nets very good resolution in the middle third of the frame (4,200 lines), but softens considerably when you look anywhere toward the periphery; the off-center average is just 1,400 lines, resulting in blurred details on the a7R IV. CA is very well controlled in the Tamron 70-300 VC, with only a small amount of CA apparent in full frame corners. slow AF esp in low lighting, its better to switch to manual focusing .. quite the hassle if your covering indoor events Negative scores indicate barrel distortion, positive scores indicate pincushion. A score of zero signifies no distortion. I replaced a Canon70-300 IS with this Tamron, and it is a good upgrade. They are very comparable optically, with the Tamron having a slight edge, especially under 200mm. At 200mm and longer, they are essentially equal.Reversing the hood from storage position to shooting position can be difficult because it rotates the focus ring and front element.
