About this deal

Patty: Set on the Isle of Wight this family story was complex with the theme of whether children can escape from what has happened in the past. Each of the sisters Rachel Imogen and Sasha were all interesting characters all with their own secrets. I really enjoyed this book and look forward to reading more from Georgina Moore. Maddie was just a teenager when her mother started spending long stretches in her birth country of Ghana, leaving Maddie as her father’s carer.

The Garnett Girls, the captivating debut from Georgina Moore, asks whether children can ever be free of the mistakes of their parents.

Set on the beautiful beaches of the Isle of Wight, The Garnett Girls asks whether children can ever be free of the mistakes their parents make. It was hard to not dislike Margo. After being left by her alcoholic husband, she fell into a deeply depressed state and became an alcoholic herself, self-medicating and neglecting her three daughters, the eldest eleven and the youngest four, for the months on end. The girls relied on their aunt, the goodwill of neighbours, and their own devices to get through. The impact this neglectful period had on them was profound and followed them into adulthood. Even taking Margo’s mental health into account, I still found her a hard character to feel any empathy for. In the present day, she was an overbearing, overly critical, and generally dishonest mother. It’s like I could understand her, but not like her, not fully accept her behaviour. There was a streak of selfishness that ran through her, I even saw it in her relationship with her own sister – who, incidentally, was a splendid character! In brief: The Garnett girls are adults, but each is tied to their larger than life mother and crumbling house on the Isle of Wight. Will they muster the courage to say what they really want? Having finally put the past behind her, the charismatic Margo holds court in her cottage on the Isle of Wight, refusing to ever speak of Richard. But her silence is keeping each of the Garnett girls from finding true happiness. The eldest, Rachel, is desperate to return to London, but is held hostage by responsibility for Sandcove, their beloved but crumbling family home. Imogen, the dreamy middle child, feels the pressure to marry her kind, considerate fiance, even when her life is taking an unexpected turn. And wild, passionate Sasha, the baby, trapped between her increasingly alienated family and her controlling husband, has unearthed the secret behind Richard’s departure… and when she reveals it, the effects are devastating.

REVEALED: The 'super comfortable' power leggings from Sweaty Betty that gym goers can't get enough of Age-defying Elle MacPherson, 59, confirms she gets fillers and Botox as the supermodel gushes about Australian facial injector to the stars Rachel and Imogen looked at each other sadly. Rachel spoke for them both. ‘Because – well…it sounds bad – but calling her Ma doesn’t feel right anymore. She isn’t being our mum. There have always been two Margos, one who is Ma, just ours, and the other who is Margo who belongs to everyone else or who is in her own world. She’s Margo now – she doesn’t think of us.’ Rachel felt suddenly angry just thinking it and guilty for saying it. This carefully drawn out story hooked me from the line “She was wiser than she should be at nine, clever and sarcastic”. I thought I had found myself in Rachel, maybe as a child I had. But as a mother and woman approaching fifty it was Margo that mostly resonated.John Stamos pays tribute to Matthew Perry as he reminisces over sweet gesture on Friends set 20 years ago: 'I never forgot that'
