Several characters had major inconsistencies. Hilary - supposedly Tom's moral compass - has zero hesitations about jumping into an affair. Olivia - the best character - wasn't seen enough, so everytime we hear from her there's a huge rundown of what she's been up to. I can appreciate the messages in this book and I think it was an important story to tell, I just think the execution could have been a bit better. This reminded me a lot of Ace of Spades in its content but I think the writing itself in that one was much better. With both parents reacting differently, it raises the moral question of how far would you go to protect your son. I didn’t want to touch my little bird’s head, could hardly bear to look at the thin brown line of congealed blood where it had been sliced clean from the body, or at the half-open, staring eyes. I wondered if she’d been alive or dead when it happened, and started to feel As far as “psychological thriller” goes, spot on. Obviously. Hence, the PTSD thing. This is such a good read and I’m honestly bummed that I had to stop halfway because I was wholeheartedly enjoying the story. There’s a second, seemingly un-related story running simultaneously from the past regarding Beth, a wife and mother. She struggles bringing up her daughter Hannah, who is best and delicately described as... well let’s just say, not “an angel” and with NO heart of gold. (I think you get the picture.) I have to say, this part was so well done! So real. So believably chilling! I want to end this by saying the ending to this book—the grand finale!—is just truly spectacular! I refuse to spoil even a moment of this ending, so I just want to leave with saying that Camilla Way has blown my mind with this ending! It is so satisfying! It was like a delicious dessert after a wonderful meal. I left with a smile on my face, and I already want to read it again!

In a moment of madness Sarah decides to go on the run with Tom. She can’t stand the idea of him possibly going to prison. They hide out in a remote corner of Cornwall but a few weeks later Freddie disappears. He later tells Sarah it is to protect her. Inevitably the whole edifice of secrets and lies comes tumbling down and Freddie and Sarah must face up to their crimes. I can't think of why this happens so often, other than to take the place that characterization normally would.
