But their notoriety may have spread a bit too far. Now old enemies from Scarlett’s past and a sinister new threat from Albert’s world are boxing them in—and holding their friends hostage.

The Outlaws Scarlett and Browne: Stroud, Jonathan The Outlaws Scarlett and Browne: Stroud, Jonathan

Britain was a land of ruin…the country was maimed and broken - but full of strange fecundity and strength”. It’s also brimming with the likes of bears, wolves, flesh-eating spear-birds and gruesome cannibal creatures, all of which whip-smart, cuss-uttering Scarlett takes into her swaggering stride. She makes an unforgettable impression from the off: “A slight slim figure in a battered brown coat, weighed down with…all the paraphernalia of a girl who walked the Wilds.” After killing four grown men who’d tried to rob her, Scarlett struts into a bank and proceeds to hold it up (turns out she needs money to repay a debt). To be honest, you had me with the introduction of Scarlett. What a character. She was just jaw dropping from start to finish, I was completely obsessed with her. So well rounded and funny, Albert’s character complimented hers so well. They were just the perfect duo to go on this adventure. I feel like I could read a further seven books about them and not get bored.

The problem is that Albert is very sheltered and knows little about the outside world and yet he doesn't ask a lot of questions. Scarlett isn't interested in asking a lot of questions and finding things out. She doesn't really care and doesn't want to get attached, so we the readers are left in the dark.

The Outlaws Scarlett and Browne, by Jonathan Stroud

Britain has become a fragmented kingdom – in fact made up of seven kingdoms – where outlaws like Scarlett McCain survive by robbing banks and living by her wits! Life is hard for Scarlett as wakes beside a dead man who had tried to rob her the night before as she looks down on the fortified town of Cheltenham. As she waits for the town to open its gates to allow her in a wolf watches her – than sets off to investigate the dead outlaws… I will tell you, Scarlett, because I trust you and respect you. Also, I think you are likely to punch me senseless if I do not."

This is a mistake. Soon there are men with dogs and guns and explosives hot on their heels. Scarlett’s used to being chased by the law, but this is extreme. It was only a little bank she’d robbed . . .
