Some proponents of “propitiation” will say that the concept of “expiation” should not be opposed to propitiation because they actually can both work together. They claim that God’s wrath can be appeased at the same time as our sins are cleansed. While this is technically true for of the theological concepts, we must not import theological concepts into words. Instead, we need to ask, which concept is mostly likely being used through this word by this author in this text. The evidence leans more toward expiation/cleansing than propitiation/appeasement. A number of important words are used in the Bible that speak of the way sinners are made right with God. Salvation, justification, forgiveness, and adoption are several words used quite often, and most people probably have an adequate understanding of them because they are used in non-theological settings as well. Atonement is also an important word, but many people probably have little understanding of what it means since it is almost exclusively theological. A popular definition is that atonement is “at-one-ment”; in other words, it is the way that we are made one with God when we used to be alienated from Him by our sins. First, the author requests prayer for those in leadership positions. Second, the author makes the theological statement that there is only one God, and that Jesus Christ is a mediator and saved humans through his atoning death. For many writers the victory was achieved because Jesus was used as a ransom or a "bait". In Mark 10:45 Jesus describes himself as "a ransom for many". This word "ransom" was debated by later writers. The Greek writer Origen suggested Jesus's death was a ransom paid to the Devil. A substitute, by definition, is one who stands in the place of another. Because all have sinned, Scripture tells us that the wages of sin is death ( Romans 6:23). The death spoken of here is eternal death, which is separation from God. Christ stepped in and took our place, becoming sin for us (not a sinner), that we might be made righteous.What is present in the sacrificial system is present in seed form in Genesis 3. God created an atonement for Adam and Eve’s sin based on the shedding of blood of innocent animals. These innocent animals served as substitutes. These frameworks have always seemed rather harsh in themselves, and often only squeeze in God’s love at the last moment—to save the day.
