About this deal

Alone with You is full of dysfunctional relationships, affairs, and cheating. Some characters choose to stay with their partner, and some leave. In “Pond,” Burton muses about “how easy it was to flee from love, about the disaster of choosing loneliness,” (p. 63). In “Leap,” Sheila realizes that “it was possible to be okay and not okay at the same time, that a thing – a dog, say, or love – could only exist alongside the possibility of its absence,” (p. 100). Discuss a few of the couples in the novel, and examine the reasons for their choices. Who do you think ends up happiest? His face relaxed and opened up, and Vivian saw how great the barriers were between a person and his happiness, and how little it took to make him think they were small. Where do I even start?? The mental health representation and genuineness and realistic nature of this book is top tier. This book felt like a hug and fresh air to me. I really enjoyed how Amelia Diane Coombs portrayed the main characters, in particular Eloise, her mental health battle and her coping mechanisms. I felt Eloise in my bones. I relate to the struggle so much and just seeing her growth throughout the book was amazing. Coombs portrayed the story in such a way that it felt as if I was talking to Eloise and hearing the story from her myself. It was beautifully written. I even have some friends on RotR. No one I know in real life, but people in Unarmed Rage, my guild, who I play with several times a week. Online, I’m less awkward. Online, I have control over who I interact with, and I always have an escape route. Unlike in real life.

The breeze feels good against my bare arms as I hop down the stairs, and I try to calm myself with each step. Seventy-five hours isn’t unrealistic. Totally doable. And working in a retirement home probably will consist of handing out Jell-O cups and calling bingo. I ignore Ms. Holiday’s note about passion and investment. If I have the hours, the scholarship committees won’t know the difference. You masterfully capture many different ages, genders and perspectives. How do you get into the voice of each character? But I can’t see. How do I know when all the smoke is gone?” Vivian’s mother said, her voice coy, flirtatious.

ALL ALONE WITH YOU is a young adult romance with underlying themes of anxiety and mental health awareness. Eloise doesn't trust easily because she's been burned before and finds it difficult to form and maintain a bond with both Austin and Marianne. For someone with anxiety, it's so much easier to shut down and shut people out. Eloise faces the decision to continue developing relationships with these two very different people or retreating into her shell. As new problems arise, she finds her daily mental health challenged in the best and worst ways. From Olivie Blake, the New York Times bestselling author of The Atlas Six, comes a literary, intimate study of time, space, and the nature of love. Alone with You in the Ether explores what it means to be unwell, and how to face the fractures of yourself and still love as if you're not broken. Following her acclaimed, Los Angeles Times Book Prize–nominated novel, The God of War, Marisa Silver’s extraordinary book, Alone With You, is a starkly elegant and superbly rendered collection of short stories. Unless otherwise stated, this discussion guide is reprinted with the permission of Simon & Schuster. There's a true romcom energy to this book that I believe readers of Lynn Painter or any YA romance really would have a great time with (if you love YA romances, you need this book in your life). NOW I WANT A MOVIE ADAPTATION - this would be so cute as movie or tv show! ♡❀

There was a right answer to this question and many, many wrong ones. This question, much like quantum groups, did not get any easier the more times Aldo was asked. The more times he ran the scenarios, in fact, the more the variables changed. How was he feeling? He had been bad before. He would be bad again. It would cycle and fluctuate the same way the weather would. It would rain in two weeks, he thought. Gary’s perfection hurt Burton in a physical way. He felt as he did when he watched a theorem unfold seamlessly, the sheer elegance of it almost painful to witness because is presence in the world threw into high relief the incomprehensible mess of his life. Alone with you is a fantastic collection of short stories that will give readers insights into the human psyche, whether it is evoked by the characters, or the secondary figures. These often dryly humorous stories are introspective in an unsentimental way, making them all the more powerful, while overall, Marisa Silver’s work remains humble yet moving, lending it strength and significance. Mom and Dad handled the situation well—considering Ana was an accident, a fact I can’t wait to rub in her face when she’s older—and made sure I found my banishment fun and exciting. We remodeled the old office space into my bedroom, decorated it and everything. Now, at seventeen, I’m glad I don’t share a bedroom wall with my parents.

Regan’s art exhibit was so cliché that I couldn’t believe it. Really? We’re going in this direction? This is the big finale? How basic! This book was set up to be so much more than that— so much edgier than that— what happened?! How did we end up in Live, Laugh, Love territory? Eloise partly choosing what university to go to because of her boyfriend of 5 months was kinda lame, ngl. I wish there’d been more hints throughout the book that she wanted to go to that university, so that the choice didn’t seem to come out of nowhere and be so influenced by the fact that Austin was going to that uni too. Is her detachment and practicality an asset for Candy as a nurse? What are the advantages and disadvantages of her attitude towards gruesome wounds and her patients in general? Eloise realizes she’s made a huge mistake—especially when she’s paired with Austin, the fellow volunteer who’s the sunshine to her cloudy day. But as Eloise and Austin work together to keep Marianne Landis—the mysterious former frontwoman of the 1970s band the Laundromats—company, something strange happens. She actually…likes Marianne and Austin? Eloise isn’t sure what to do with that, especially when her feelings toward Austin begin to blur into more-than-friends territory. Alone With You in the Ether plays with narrative structure and linear time to weave a story of two broken people crashing together like comets, and we, as audience, are witness to their glorious destruction." — Tor.com
