As with all of the Primarchs, Sanguinius was genetically engineered to be a supreme super-soldier but was cast into the warp during his infancy along with his brothers, and found on the nuclear-blasted moon of Baal Secundus. Their duties were to patrol the wide expanse of the desolate wastes of the Maelstrom's western zones, responding to and neutralising Chaos and piratical threats as they were encountered, a duty the Chapter took to with great fervour.

The Blood Angels recruit their Aspirants from the chapter's home planet of Baal and its two moons. [1] The time of choosing is known as the Duplus Lunaris, a centennial alignment of Baal and its moons. During this time, members of the Chapter visit each tribe of the Baal System to encourage participation in the selection process. The subsequent trials differ, with ritual combat being typical on Baal Primus. On Baal Secundus meanwhile they travel to Angel's Fall (the place where Sangunius was found as an infant) must reach the Place of Challenge by journeying through a vast, hostile desert, and a series of canyons, infested with Fire Scorpions and Thirstwater. While the trial claims many, those that succeed come before the Blood Angels, who winnow out those that are genetically incompatible with their Gene-Seed. All are permitted to return home, though the most promising rejects are elevated to the status of Chapter Serf. After nine days of games at the Place of Challenge, their numbers are reduced even further. Those that remain are elevated to Aspirant. These Aspirants are then force-marched to the next Place of Challenge, where they are split into smaller units. Any aspirant who fails at this point is doomed to never leave the facility, and will either die in the trials or remain there as guards. [109]However, the Astartes of the Lamenters Chapter are noted to suffer from a kind of mental melancholy, although it is unclear if this is due to some unexpected flaw in their gene-seed or if it is simply the result of the unfortunate events that have repeatedly befallen the Chapter.

All Shadowhunters have some level of angel blood in their veins, specifically that of their creator, Raziel. However, an exceptional amount of pure angel blood— Ithuriel's, as a result of experiments by Valentine Morgenstern—runs in the veins of a number of Shadowhunters, giving varied results, namely:The Sanguinary Guard do not believe that the Sanguinor is the Chapter's primarch but that he is Azkaellon, the original founder of the Sanguinary Guard, who has been preserved beyond time by the divine will of the Emperor. Evil Plan: Magos Castia-Theta-9 reveals that after the Genestealer Cult had taken over the planet of Niades, they awaited the coming of their "Gods", the Tyranids. However with the emergence of the Great Rift, the Tyranid Hive Fleet could not arrive, leaving the planet stranded in the grip of warpstorms, with the cultist's population slowly dwindling out. The cult then enslaved several astropaths and forced them to message any ship with promises of safe harbor, but in actuality would kill or infect the ship's crew, intending on sending the infiltrated ships to other worlds to infest once the warpstorms have calmed. By the current events of the series, several dozens of imperial ships have been infested with genestealers and cultists. Later, as with all other loyal Legions, the Blood Angels were forced to split into many smaller Chapters. Charadon Campaign (698.M41) - In 698.M41 the Lamenters took part in a combined Space Marine force led by the Ultramarines under the command of Chapter Master Marneus Calgar, which also consisted of elements of the Angels of Absolution, Marines Errant and the Silver Skulls Chapters. During a seven-year-long Imperial Crusade, the force inflicted a series of major defeats on the Ork empire of Charadon which delayed the invasion of the Imperium by the WAAAGH! Argluk for thirty standard years. On Terra below, the Blood Angels went utterly berserk, their vision clouded by images of their Primarch’s final moments. They fought as if they themselves were the Great Angel in his desperate battle with Horus. In their madness, the Blood Angels were nigh unstoppable, swiftly turning the tide against the Traitor forces and playing a crucial role in the ultimate defeat of Horus’ ground forces. Though the visions eventually faded, Sanguinius’ death left a permanent psychic imprint within the gene-code of his sons – a flaw that still exists in every Blood Angel more than 10 millennia later.
