About this deal

The AOC I1601FWUX is a pretty solid performer when it comes to being a portable display. It is slim and light enough to carry around with a laptop and doesn't require an external power source. It doesn't produce the best image but it can work to get the job down for most tasks. AOC took a minimalist approach to connections and controls on the I1601FWUX. On the left edge of the monitor, near the bottom, are a power button—which doubles as an onscreen display (OSD) control—and a USB-C port. If you have worked through the other fixes and you are still getting a no signal message, then you need to try something a little more on the hardware side of things. You may need to try to connect your PC to a different monitor or your monitor to a different PC to see if the issues continue or if it is the combination of the two. If you aren’t getting a signal to your AOC monitor, it could be that your computer is actually ignoring the graphics output from your PC or it is sending them elsewhere. If this is the case, the monitor is trying to pull information from a place where there is none or the information is going to a place where it cannot be displayed.

When devising the I1601P, AOC clearly prioritized an ultra-sleek and light design over all other considerations. For the most part, this approach makes a lot of sense, but does result in somewhat of a trade-off. If there is a solid complaint, it would be the "case" that comes with the device. This is essentially a cover that protects the front of the display when you are carrying it around but also doubles as a stand. It folds and has magnetic sections that latch on to the screen. Now, your ability to use the monitor relies on the quality of this stand and sadly it just isn't all that good. Seeing as the I1601FWUX works in sync with Windows 10’s native night mode, low blue mode feels a little redundant, as does overdrive mode — you’re not going to be doing any gaming on this, although you might want to watch the odd YouTube video. The quality of the folding stand is more than a little frustrating, especially when there are so many better examples on the market as covers for iPads and other tablets. It's hard to overlook the poor execution of such a vital element of the product. If you think the issue is with your monitor, connect another spare monitor to your PC and see if it works. If it doesn’t, then you have something going on within your tower.

The monitor's port and interface selection is perfect in its minimalism, with just a single USB Type-C port and a single button for power. In normal operation, it gives you everything you need to get up and running, and not a single thing you don't. If you haven’t changed your settings, you want to reboot into Safe Mode to bypass issues and fix the resolution in your settings. By default, Windows will use a lower display resolution, which is more likely to work. Although supporting USB Type-C is great, it would have been even better if it could have also supported USB Type-A to USB Type-C. This monitor did not work when trying to hook it up using an adapter or even just a Type-A to Type-C cable. A couple years from now this might not be such a huge issue but Type-A is still a lot more common currently, so the option would have been nice. Although the stand is no substitute for the kind you'd get with a non-portable desktop monitor, it's decent compared with some similar mobile-monitor stands I have encountered. Above all, it is sturdy—it didn't collapse once, unlike some other portable-monitor stands I've tried. For these reasons, you won’t want to use the I1601FWUX for any heavy photo or video editing. But, assuming you’re working with a laptop that’s powerful enough to competently handle something like Adobe Premiere Pro anyway, your device will (hopefully) come with a decent screen.Contrast ratio is 565:1, which isn’t ideal. Generally, a decent level of contrast for an IPS monitor is anything close to 1000:1 or higher, so this is way off the mark. This is particularly noticeable when watching videos where there’s plenty of dark areas or high levels of contrast – live music videos being a good example. As we said above, you can get around this somewhat by upping contrast and overdrive, but it still isn’t perfect. It’s also easy to shift around on your desk – if you need to feng shui things to make way for a steaming mug of coffee, or to make room for your cat that just leapt up to try to ‘help’ with your review. This issue is most common when you have been adjusting your display settings. Thankfully, you can reset them pretty easily. Usually the monitor will reset in a few seconds, but if it doesn’t, you can restart your computer and see if that helps. All in all, I'd rate this monitor as good for business documents and web surfing, and passable (though not ideal) for casual photo viewing and light video watching.

It’s great value for money for workers who need something they can sling into their bag at a moment’s notice. Just make sure you’ve invested in a laptop bag with plenty of padding. Verdict If the monitor works fine, then you probably have an issue with your monitor. It could just be a port that doesn’t work, but you will need to connect it to another PC that it does work with to see if you can solve the problem. Replace Whatever Causes The ProblemAs mentioned earlier, this AOC panel has just one video input: a USB Type-C connector. In this case, the USB-C interface supports DisplayPort over USB, which lets the monitor draw power—and receive a video signal—from a computer over a USB-C connection. Connecting the display is dead simple, thanks to the USB Type-C connection. Plug in the single cable, connecting the monitor to the laptop, and you're pretty much done. Press the power button to turn it on, and the automatic driver installation takes care of the rest. During our testing, we used the display with a Dell Latitude 7389 2-in-1 laptop, the HP Chromebook 13 G1 and the Apple MacBook Pro 13-inch (Touch Bar). In every instance, the display connected easily and worked without any additional driver installation or setup.

For your money, you get the 15.6-inch monitor, the screen cover/stand and a USB-C to USB-C cable (with USB-A converter), which handles both power and data. There’s also a CD containing the relevant drivers, although these should install automatically anyway. The 15.6-inch screen of the I1601FWUX is an IPS (in-plane switching) type, and as you’d expect from a monitor using this technology, viewing angles — on paper, 160 degrees at both orientations — are great. There was only mild greying and discolouration at extreme angles, which is fine. If you really wanted to work with the I1601FWUX at 90 degrees to your laptop, you could… The refresh rate is only 60Hz, limiting its performance as a gaming monitor, but that was never AOC’s intention. For anything a regular office worker might want to do, 60Hz is absolutely fine. For a better option, consider the Asus ZenScreen MB16AC, which is also a bit dim but offers better image quality overall, decent stand options and superior controls.Using the display on the go is not quite as simple. The slim display comes with a folding magnetic cover that does double duty as a display cover for storage and a stand for portable use. In our color testing, the I1601FWUX covered just 61.4 percent of the sRGB color space (see the chromaticity chart above). The triangle represents the colors that comprise sRGB—essentially, all the colors that can be made by mixing different percentages of red, green, and blue. The white boxes show where the data points would be for a monitor that covers the full sRGB space. Sometimes a resolution issue will result in no signal for your AOC monitor. If your PC’s graphics card is set to display a resolution that your monitor cannot, you may get an “AOC monitor no signal” message. Despite it not being plug and play on the Windows 10 units I tried, the I1601FWUX worked instantly when plugged into a Mac. It didn't require any drivers and it just powered up and started showing an image in less than five seconds. It felt kind of weird having a secondary display, but using it for a few days, it made sense. It hasn't been a necessary part of my arsenal, but having a press release on one screen and the writing area on another or similar setup, proved very useful. The AOC I1601FWUK is a cheap and cheerful Full HD mini-monitor boasting great viewing angles, convenience, and portability.
