One of our favorite superhots is the yellow/orange variant of the 7 pot primo (pictured above). These pods are not quite as hot as the red 7 pot primo, but they have a delicious, citrus-like flavor and plenty of heat for us! The history of the Carolina reaper is not without controversy. Troy Primeaux of Primo’s Peppers bred the 7 pot Primo variety from Trinidad Capsicum chinense peppers. The Primo pepper is a strikingly similar pepper to the reaper.A typical Carolina Reaper plant will produce between 20 to 30 peppers when fully grown, although this number can be significantly higher, with some reports of over 50 peppers coming out of one plant. Here is a complete guide covering common questions and concerns about growing Carolina Reapers. Carolina Reaper peppers are some of my favorites to grow! Photo by Spicy Trio. Step-by-step Guide for Growing Carolina Reaper Peppers in a Garden This hot pepper comes with an average size- about 2 – 4 inches long. It is wider than Naga and Ghost peppers. It is elongated with a wrinkled texture. The Carolina Reaper is a cross between the well-known ghost pepper and red habanero. The Winthrop University in South Carolina was the testing location. The highest Scoville units measured were over 2.2 million, the average is 1,641,000. The Chocolate Bhutlah pepper ranks up to 2,000,000 SHU on the official Scoville scale. Amongst the world’s hottest peppers, the Chocolate Bhutlah is close to the Carolina Reaper. Some even claim that this pepper tastes hotter than the Reaper pepper. Carolina Reaper plants take 90 to 100 days to grow. Given that peppers require hot temperatures and are sensitive to changes in the soil, this means that they often are planted at least six weeks before the normal planting season. It’s no surprise this pepper sits among the world’s hottest peppers as its roots, although a little murky, are super-hot studs. It’s a hybrid of a Bhut Jolokia (a.k.a. ghost pepper) and a 7 Pot Douglah (a.k.a. chocolate 7 Pot or chocolate douglah), hence the clever “Bhut-lah” name. Though, there may be another pepper in the mix leading to its murky heritage. First, a warning: this is a scorching chili. Eating it raw is not ever advised. This is an extreme heat that works better diluted into other ingredients. There are lots of hot pepper daredevils that have recorded their experiences eating this hot pepper raw, so it’s easy to see for yourself − just take a look on YouTube.

Personally speaking, I enjoy some heat with a medium amount of burn and sting in it. I like to feel it and gasp from its heat but not so much that I want more heat, more pain and not be able to taste my food. The ripening of Carolina Reapers should be a hands-off process. Once the pepper has fruited, it is likely that it will survive and be healthy, so give it the time it needs to fully ripen on the plant. If a frost is coming, consider moving the plant indoors in a large, 5-gallon container to let the ripening process continue.
