a b Tynan, Alexandra; Cook, Benjamin (November 2016). "The Cybermum". Doctor Who Magazine. No.504. Tunbridge Wells: Panini UK Ltd. p.17. Fullerton, Huw (6 September 2017). "Doctor Who's Peter Capaldi had a VERY nerdy complaint about the return of the Mondasian Cybermen". Radio Times . Retrieved 18 September 2017. The Cybermen eventually managed to destroy most of Voga, ( TV: Revenge of the Cybermen) but not without severely weakening themselves. At this time, the Nomads had more organic components than any other previous model except the original Mondans. They were forced to use a stolen Selachian ship as their ship. Above left is the Denys Fisher Cyberman toy which was part of the same set as the the "Red Top" Dalek. It does not have have flat discs on its joints or pipes down its chest like the latest Revenge Cybermen. The wellingtons over the trousers and the cross-hatch on the chest unit make it obvious that, just like with the "Red Top" Dalek, the photos from that same issue of the Radio Times were the reference material used to create this toy! Partial conversions occurred. In a partial conversion, the subject took on several features of the Cybermen. For example, Tobias Vaughn's torso was immune to gunfire. ( TV: The Invasion) Sometimes, the conversion could be interrupted, yet still partly functional, such as with Ashad. ( TV: The Haunting of Villa Diodati)

( AUDIO: Monsters in Metropolis) The Cyberships leftover from the invasion were examined and exploited by humans, allowing them to make advances in space travel, leading Sarah Jane Smith to describe the return of Mondas as "both the greatest disaster and most astonishing blessing ever to have happened to the human race." The Cybermen appeared for a final time in the classic series in Silver Nemesis (1988), in which a fleet of Cybermen warships assemble to convert Earth into a new Mondas. A Cybermen scouting party is sent to Earth in search of the legendary Nemesis statue, a Time Lord artefact of immense power, made of the "living metal" validium. The intervention of the Seventh Doctor ( Sylvester McCoy) and his companion Ace ( Sophie Aldred), however, ensures that the Nemesis destroys the entire cyber-fleet instead.

It is a strange sight to see the second generation of Cybermen costumes in full colour in the 1970s, given that a third generation had been introduced before the end of the 60s. The narrow heads which featured on three occasions with Troughton are particularly distinctive. Between the series' cancellation and its subsequent revival, the Cybermen make one brief appearance, in the 1993 Children in Need special Dimensions in Time, as one of several enemies used by evil Time Lady the Rani ( Kate O'Mara) to hunt the Doctor. After the The Invasion finished its run in December 1968, the Cybermen would not be seen again properly for over six years. Jon Pertwee had no battles with them at all. But in this period of near-extinction, there were still sightings of these metallic monsters. Tantalising reminders that they might still be out there in space - perhaps in unseen adventures. For such occasions, there were never any new costumes created and so the components became ever more mixed and increasingly damaged. When they were absent from the TV series, they were more like real Cybermen than ever - with cannibalised components and patched up with repairs. Rymill, Gavin (November 2016). "Cyber Conversion!". Doctor Who Magazine. No.504. Tunbridge Wells: Panini UK Ltd. p.44. The Doctor kept the chest plate and head of one of these Cybermen in the TARDIS drawing room. ( GAME: TARDIS, The Gunpowder Plot) While in the Arctic in the year 2010, the Doctor encountered Cybermen that had been buried under the ice for tens of thousands of years after being hit by a temporal storm. An excavation began to awaken the army, commanded by a Cyber-Lord, releasing Cybermats which in turn created Cyberslaves. The Eleventh Doctor arrived on 4 May 2010 and stopped their awakening. He blew up their ship and returned them to stasis. ( GAME: Blood of the Cybermen)

This line of enquiry started out because I thought it was nice to see these monsters had a life of their own, surviving outside the Doctor Who canon. But in fact it turned out that that these unofficial hybrid Cybermen were more influential over merchandise and the television series designs than the show's own continuity. The destiny and proliferation of the Cyber-race owes a lot to the Radio Times.

a b "BBC One - Doctor Who, Season 6, the Invasion, Episode 7, the Invasion: Episode 7". 14 December 1968. The third model, seen in Revenge of the Cybermen, was a much larger, snake-like cybermat that could be remotely controlled and could inject poison into its victims. It had no visible eyes or other features, and was as vulnerable to gold dust as the Cybermen were.

Then a strange thing happened. The official world of Doctor Who seemed to lose its memory. The hybrids took over, and ended up changing their own future. This is the story of the forgotten Cybermen of the early 70s, and their jumbled lives.

Panini Magazines/ Hachette Partworks Ltd. p.61. The pieces of Cyberman costume that were brought together were: a helmet from Wheel in Space, a Chest Unit from The Invasion, and the suit of the Cybercontroller from Tomb of the Cybermen. By 2070, the Cybermen were known and feared in several galaxies ( PROSE: Doctor Who and the Cybermen) but were thought extinct by Earth. At this time the Earth's weather was controlled by the Gravitron installation in the Moonbase. The Faction planned to use the Gravitron to disrupt Earth's weather and destroy all life on the planet. ( TV: The Moonbase) According to Terri Willis in 2136, the Cybermen practically disappeared from human space after this event.
