About this deal

One of the really neat things is the name of the narrator: Illiam Quillian Kewley. I thought that name had enormous promise, and the man himself, being a Manx smuggler, and therefore wonderfully jaunty and disrespectful, especially when speaking in a mixture of Manx and English about mainland English people, shows great promise (in the parts of the book which he gets to narrate. But Illiam Quillian Kewley turns out to be only one of many narrators and therefore he gets to tell only a small amount of this very very long story. There must be upwards of twenty other narrators, and it's even hard to be accurate as to their number since many of them sound alike or only narrate very small sections here and there so that they are instantly forgotten). English Passengers is the story of the 19th century voyage to Tasmania of a disparate group of Englishmen in search of the Garden of Eden. It is told in 20 different voices, won the 2000 Whitbread Book of the Year Award and was shortlisted for the Booker Prize for Fiction. gads kapteinis Illiams Kvilians Kevlejs (Illiam Quillian Kewley) nolēmis piepelnīties ar kontrabandu. After burying Gus in space, Jim learns the Autodoc can function as a hibernation pod for one person, and Jim insists that Aurora use it for the remainder of the voyage. Realizing she would never see Jim again, she chooses to remain awake with him. He presents her with the makeshift engagement ring he made earlier, which she accepts.

But the place they are going has been inhabited for centuries by tribes of nomadic people with a long history of successful and sophisticated survival. Alas for them, this is the era of Manifest Destiny, and the colonizers (many of whom are cast off prisoners from the more civilized parts of the Empire) believe that the British way of life is the only proper one, and the way the natives live is simple savagery. Shown the right way and given the proper education, they will no doubt come around to a purer understanding of how right it is that they give dominion over their lives to white people who know better. Not that they are capable of actually rising to the level of civilization their white masters exhibit, but they can be tamed somewhat. That the natives seem at best sullen about these favors being blandished upon them, and at worst seek to kill the interlopers, seems to largely be lost on the invading hordes. The questions, discussion topics, and suggested reading that follow are designed to enhance your group’s reading of Matthew Kneale’s English Passengers, a riveting historical novel that was nominated for the prestigious Booker Prize (2000). Set in the nineteenth century, it explores in dramatic, eyewitness detail the colonization of Tasmania and the thirst for conquest, adventure, and fame that propelled the spread of the British Empire. Introduction English Passengers presents the diverse and often conflicting perspectives of a remarkable cast of characters—including British convicts, government officials, missionaries who impose their European standards and self-serving rules on the native population, aboriginal Tasmanians caught in a desperate struggle for survival, and members of a bizarre expedition searching for the Garden of Eden. The narrative begins in 1857, as Captain Illiam Quillian Kewley of the Sincerity, thwarted in his plans to smuggle tobacco and brandy into England, is forced to put his boat up for charter. He soon finds himself bound for the Pacific, carrying not only his well-hidden contraband but also the Reverend Geoffrey Wilson, an eccentric vicar out to prove that the Biblical Garden of Eden lies in the heart of Tasmania; Dr. Thomas Potter, an arrogant scientist developing a revolutionary and sinister theory about the races of mankind; and Timothy Renshaw, a diffident young botanist. Each man offers a highly personalized record of the high seas adventures and internecine feuds that mark the voyage. English Passengers is a superbly modulated composition in multiple voices: the first-person accounts, letters and memoirs of 21 individuals, plus one short newspaper report. Peevay's command of English is the result of two years' private tutoring in Bristol, at the behest of a kindly farmer's wife. Nordyke, Kimberly (January 24, 2017). READERS GUIDE

The meaning of the book is serious and important, taking historical fact, and the extraordinary and all but lost linguistic beauty of the Manx, and combining it with an unerring sense of humour in the relationships between characters, and a strong fictional plot. Kneale studied History at Oxford University before taking up fiction writing, and his exacting research makes the tale historically interesting, and educational, as well as entertaining. The major themes of the novel are threaded throughout the story, tying the many characters and pieces in the tale together, such as hatred and bigamy versus open mindedness and love; the “atheisms of geology” versus religious fanaticism; false versus true morality, and appearances versus deeper reality. The ending of the story is superb, a fine twist, which ties the story together perfectly, and provides a lovely kind of final justice, even if it hints at something uglier which will form an important historical force. English Passengers is a wonderful, fast moving, fascinating story which will appeal to all readers, from the most pompous to the most populist. Kneale builds for him a beautiful mongrel prose: it plunders the earth and the rain for its metaphors, mixes lapidary Biblical rhythms with creative swearing, and largely prefers to use "that" instead of "the", poignantly implying a community of feeling and experience which is exactly what is being destroyed before our eyes. As the story unfolds, more voices are added – those of the colonizers who are occupying the island and setting about the systematic obliteration of the way of life of its native inhabitants Cavassuto, Maria (August 12, 2016). " 'Passengers': First Photos of Jennifer Lawrence and Chris Pratt Released". Variety . Retrieved June 23, 2018. Told in the first person by a large cast with the major character’s having the most input I found myself racing along as each and every character, be they repulsive or pleasing made this plot driven book a kind of pleasure and pain. The sheer buffoonery of the English colonialist made me laugh out loud at times. On the other hand, the genocide committed on the inhabitants by the English colonialists left one aware that there is that stain on English history. English? I think some may ask. Yes English as this is the point of the story.
