About this deal

Deposits and sludge build up in the engine for several reasons, one of the most common of which for most drivers is frequent short journeys. Taking a lot of short trips and stop and go driving is surprisingly hard on the lubricating oil because moisture that builds up in the oil during the previous rest period won’t have time to evaporate and leave the oil. This means the oil becomes diluted and increases viscosity and in the end it doesn’t lubricate the moving parts of the engine as well, leading to increased wear. NOTE: Flushing filters to remove solid particles should not be replaced by the water-removing filters.

A well-designed oil analysis program should enable these common problems to be detected before a flush is required. When successful, only an oil change may be required. In addition to written procedures, be sure to document all aspects of the oil flush. Keeping logs of the temperature, flow, pressure, filter life and work activity will be vital in determining if the flush is on schedule or if something has changed. While the fluid is at operating temperature, completely drain the system, paying attention to the reservoir, all lines, cylinders, accumulators, filter housings or any area of fluid accumulation. Also, replace the filters. There are unique and often serious problems that can be an unpleasant side effect of machine flushing. However, evidence of these may not occur immediately. Flushing disturbs a machine in many ways that can’t always be predicted or easily observed. The coldest part in the flushing loop should have a minimum temperature of 122°F (50°C). This can be achieved by using a minimum flushing fluid supply of 140°F (60°C). In certain cases, this can be achieved only by insulating certain parts of the loop. For in-service machinery after an oil change due to heavy fluid contamination, component failure, extremely degraded lubricant (oxidation), or if a system flushing has not been performed in the past three years. Drain the used oil while hot, so the viscosity is low and contaminants remain suspended and can be drained within the oil.

Table 1 lists example tests that could be used to reveal precursor, impending, or severe conditions: The following is a list of potential problems (side effects) associated with flushing where oil analysis might provide a timely alert: Figure 1. These samples were taken from a hydraulic system operating in the North Sea. The system had a history of component failures. The top sample was from the reservoir after 15 years of service, before proper cleaning. The bottom sample was after cleaning. The cleaning was performed with the system pressurized and in full service. After the flushing, the system experienced no failures in two years. Regardless of the flushing compound/fluid selected, unless it is identical to the lubricant used following the flush, it is important that all of the flushing fluid be removed from the sump prior to final fill. Some petroleum solvents with a concentration of five percent can create an appreciable thinning effect on the lubricant viscosity. However, brake cleaner includes a number of chemicals such as acetone and tetrachloroethylene. These solvents are known to cause problems for nitrile, neoprene, millable polyurethane and silicone seals. Ethylene-propylene (EPDM) seals have a very poor petroleum oil and solvent resistance, and are not recommended for exposure to aromatic hydrocarbons or diesel oil.
