About this deal

Going Solo is a book by Roald Dahl, first published by Jonathan Cape in London in 1986. It is a continuation of his autobiography describing his childhood, Boy and detailed his travel to Africa and exploits as a World War II pilot. Inevitably, she concludes she's better off going solo. "Also," Ava jokes, scanning her tidy apartment, "I really don't have much room here for a man. I mean, I have no closet space! Where am I going to put him?"" The book offers an overview of the changing culture where for the first time people are living alone in huge numbers. Unfortunately, many societies, especially in the USA, haven't been very enthusiastic about adjusting to this new way of life, preferring to rail about selfishness than really meet the challenges of a large population of elderly people on their own. urn:oclc:671254077 Republisher_operator [email protected] Scandate 20120117060106 Scanner scribe20.shenzhen.archive.org Scanningcenter shenzhen Source

This book is not about singles in the sense of those who don't have a romantic partner. Rather, it’s about what Klinenberg calls singletons: those who choose to live alone. Klinenberg states the facts: that the number of singletons has risen, and will continue to rise, and this is an inevitable byproduct of modern and wealthy societies where living alone has actually replaced the nuclear family as the most common form of household. Regardless of how we feel about this phenomenon (e.g., conservative politicians pushing marriage on the population as the only valid lifestyle), it’s on the rise and societies need to heed this and make arrangements for it. I thought this was very interesting. Between marriages I lived alone for a decade, basically. Occasionally I stayed at my parents' home for extended visits or crashed with friends and he year I was saying my husband I lived with a friend. I am very happy to have had that time, both when I was both single and living solo and when I was only one or the other. I did learn a lot about myself and probably shouldn't have gotten married the first time without having done it. Smile. It means the same things in every language. It means you are happy, friendly, approachable, kind. A smile opens many conversations.

They did not think for one moment that they would find anything but a burnt-out fuselage and a charred skeleton, and they were astounded when they came upon my still-breathing body lying in the sand nearby.’As you travel solo you can have as much alone time as you want. But what many people don't realize is that you can have a lot of really social time as well. for most of us loneliness is inevitable. It's part of the human condition, and she rejects the belief that living alone is its source. Like many divorced women we interviewed, Helen copes with her own feelings of social failure, in part, by dismissing the notion that another marriage or romantic relationship would alleviate them."

Unless you’re a confident map reader, striking out for the hills alone can feel perilous— hence a proliferation of group walking holidays dedicated to solo travellers. Nefeli Nine’s signature wellness retreat, hosted in a secluded villa on a rugged stretch of coastline near Athens, brings guests together for twice-daily yoga sessions, relaxed rural hikes and three gourmet Greek meals a day, but leaves plenty of time free for them to do their own thing — whether that’s meditation, reading or taking a nap by the pool. River cruises can be less daunting for solos than ocean voyages — the ships are smaller, so if you gel with a fellow passenger you can expect to bump into them again, and ports tend to be close to town centres, so if you don’t want to join an organised excursion it’s simple to strike out alone. Collective belief in the myth of autonomy obscures the fact that our prized individualism is directly underwritten by social institutions: the family, the market, the state. Related fantasies - of self-reliance, or the self-made man, for instance - lead us to ignore the webs of interdependency that give even the most antisocial among us the strength to go it alone. Trailfinders runs a number of group tours for solo travellers — meaning everyone else on the trip is there on their own, too, and you get your own room at no additional cost. Its Experience South Africaitinerary takes you to the country’s most famous sights, with Cape Town, the Garden Route, Johannesburgand Kruger National Park all included on the 11-night tour. There’s a whole raft of experiences covered (cultural, historical, oenological), but the ones that are most likely to linger in the memory are the wildlife encounters you’ll have, whether that’s watching penguins along the coast or spotting the big five on a game drive.More pleasure in Dahl’s accounts from life than from his fables” by Ralph Elliott from the February 14, 1987 issue of The Canberra Times– Canberra, Australia ( read online)
