About this deal

Fortunately, we have an incredibly extensive range, so you can find almost any Hitachi control you need by entering the model number of the product into the search box. Choosing the right one for you For some, it’s a nice-to-have additional feature. For others it’s a mixed blessing, with some settings and functions only available when you use the app. That might be fine now, but it means you could lose those functions (which can be as important as being able to balance the audio to suit your room) when the app is no longer supported by the manufacturer.

As well as wired connections, many soundbars also support Bluetooth for wirelessly connecting phones and tablets and some also have Wi-Fi, allowing for higher-quality music streaming, potential integration in a multiroom wireless speaker network and support for digital voice assistants such as Alexa and Google Assistant. You might need to change the delay and volume levels, as every room has its own shape, layout and furniture, and these all affect the sound. 5. Adjust the subwoofer level

Having a wide array of connection options is always a bonus as you will never know what you might want to connect to your soundbar in the future. The most convenient is HDMI: this is the connection favoured by most modern soundbars, even cheap ones. You will most often see an HDMI input (or maybe even two or three), which you connect your sources to (games console, Sky box etc) and an HDMI output, which passes the video signal to your TV. As ever, the more connections, the better, as it gives you more flexibility in the future. If you’re part of the Alexa smart home ecosystem and want an affordable soundbar to slot neatly into it, the Polk React is the best choice around. If you’ve got a bit more cash to play with and want superior audio quality, we recommend you take a look at the Sonos Beam 2. Follow our six easy steps to set yours up. We also explain what the different connections mean so you can choose the best for your setup, and take you through what updates you need to make to your TV.

The soundstage is pleasingly wide thanks to the soundbar’s side-firing speakers and the dedicated centre channel ensures dialogue remains clearly intelligible. Alexa built-in provides a decent level of smart functionality to complement the HW-Q990B’s first-rate sound, while the new design of the bar, sub and rear speakers mean it looks a lot better than its 2021 predecessor. We would have liked to have seen a couple of additional HDMI inputs and support for 4K/120 and Variable Refresh Rate passthrough, but the HW-Q990B is a roaring success regardless. There’s a newer model available – the HW-Q990C– but given the price difference, we’re still recommending last year’s model. The absence of an in-built voice assistant and the decision not to include a remote sting a little, particularly given how much the Dione costs, but in terms of style and performance, few standalone soundbars get close to the Dione. Firstly, there are originals. These are genuine, like-for-like replacements sourced direct from Hitachi if you would prefer the same brand. If you're only getting parts of the sound, it’s also possible that your TV, set-top box, or disc player is outputting audio that your soundbar can’t use properly. Similar to the problem earlier in this guide where no sound is coming out at all, your soundbar might be receiving a full 5.1 surround sound mix but may only support 2.1 or 2.0. This means you might be missing out on a huge amount of the sound that’s supposed to be in the movie you’re watching. Ensure that your TV and other boxes aren’t outputting in surround sound, again by finding the audio settings menus and ensuring they’re set to either 2.0 or 2.1. My picture and sound are out of sync Many manufacturers imply that their TVs will only link with AV equipment from the same brand, but basic CEC functionality usually works between brands – just make sure HDMI CEC is enabled. HDMI ARC

Search by model number:

Dolby Atmos uses upwards-firing speakers to bounce sound off the ceiling, to put you in the middle of the action. If your soundbar supports it, follow the instruction menu so you can get it set up for your specific room shape and size. 6. Furnishings Now that you’ve made the connection from your soundbar to your TV via an HDMI ARC or optical connection, make sure that both of your devices are turned on. You can do this by their separate remotes or on using the buttons on the devices themselves. Test and Troubleshoot Any Connection Issues When Using HDMI ARC: VIZIO TVs are connected to soundbars in the same way as the instructions above, through an optical or HDMI connection. For an optical connection on the VIZIO TV, the port may be called ‘S/PDIF’, and for an HDMI ARC connection, use ‘HDMI 1’, which is the ARC port. Make sure it’s not too close up against a wall, as this will result in boomy bass. You can put it inside your TV cabinet as long as it doesn’t cause distracting vibrations. 2. Keep it centred Hitachi is known for its low-priced smart TVs, which often come with Roku TV built-in. Connecting your soundbar to a Hitachi Roku TV is the same as if you use your Roku remote (no matter your TV brand) to control all of your TV and media.

If your soundbar has an external subwoofer, it might need a cable connection. Others are wireless and can be placed elsewhere, but generally it should be within 10 metres of the soundbar. A separate subwoofer delivers more convincing bass, adds richness and body to audio in general and can deliver room-shaking low-frequency sound effects. Look for a wireless subwoofer, which will allow you to hide the subwoofer away, out of sight. Certain soundbars also come with rear speakers that deliver truly enveloping 5.1 or 7.1 surround sound. If you’re not sure you want these, some bars allow you to upgrade your soundbar further down the line by adding wireless rear speakers. Once a product has been unboxed, we measure and weigh it and give it a good going over to gauge its sturdiness and quality of finish. It’s then typically connected to a 4K TV via HDMI, though we also test soundbars with laptops and desktop computers if that’s what they’re designed for use with. We then put the soundbar through its paces by feeding it a wide range of content, including films, sports and TV shows. When using an optical cable, there’s a small chance that the Television will know to use the soundbar automatically, but it’s more likely that you’ll have to go find the Televisions speaker selection menu and change it as described above. If this doesn’t solve the problem, make sure your TV volume is turned all the way up so you can adjust the soundbar’s volume directly. This might help since interference is introduced when the source (TV) volume is low and the output (soundbar) volume is high. Although I used the ARC connection as it was most convenient for me, with the appropriate cable, one can alternatively use an optical/coaxial connection. In addition the instruction manual shows how the soundbar can be used as a hub for the connection of a set top box or DVD player etc.
