I recently chatted with her about the book, her own interior design journey and the importance of a happy home for a healthy life. Do you think the house you grew up in influenced your own sense of style and the interiors you now love? Frida Ramstedt and her interior design blog, Tendenser, has been a favourite read of mine for years, so when I heard she was writing her first book, ‘The Interior Design Handbook’, I couldn’t wait for it to be published here in the UK. What looks good and what feels good is not always the same, but today we have become so focused on how interiors look, that we have grown blind to if they work.

Ramsted has attempted to distil the gut feeling that many professionals base their work on into actionable and practical advice that everyone can use. She explains the importance of designing a home that makes us feels good and that doesn’t just look good. She explores the importance of the mathematics of design and how many successful interiors employ the golden ratio, the rule of thirds, three-point thinking and symmetry. But I have never studied interior design, at least not in the traditional sense. I haven’t got a degree in interior design. I’ve done a short interior design course, but that is the extent of my formal training. What I know about interiors has come from years of research and interviewing experts for magazines and for this blog. Professional designers and architects, of course, have their practical manuals that contain guidelines and ergonomic measures as to how a house should be constructed, but I’ve never found anything aimed at individuals. What was needed is a book we can hold in our hands as we set about turning houses into homes, a book that will help us come up with our own solutions instead of simply encouraging us to follow other people’s.I want to change that, and it is why I’ve written The Interior Design Handbook. It’s a comprehensive guide to the basic principles, explaining the rules of thumb and recommended measurements designers and stylists use in their everyday work.

I mean, it’s a pretty easy assumption to make when someone spends their life writing about interiors and sharing tips and advice. I think interior knowledge is a game changer if we want to make long lasting and sustainable decisions for our homes and our wellbeing. After such an extraordinary year what is currently catching your eye in the world of interiors? How do you feel our homes and how we live in them will change in years to come? What was the inspiration behind your book, ‘The Interior Design Handbook’? What do you hope readers around the world will love and learn from it? If you look at the images in an interior magazine or on social media, I mean really look at them, they are filled with solutions that may look pretty but they don’t work in real life. They are both inspiring and frustrating.

The Interior Design Handbook by Frida Ramstedt is one of the most useful interior design books I have ever had the pleasure to read. Full of practical and useful advice, this book is designed to help you create a home that not only looks good but feels good too. She explores architectural styles, colour choice, using lighting to create visual effect and mood as well as a whole host of design tips such as hiding TVs and designing for children. As an influencer you have to accept the fact that you work in a constantly changing industry. There is no risk of getting bored, but you can never really rest. You are never better than your latest post, which can be challenging at times, but overall, suits my curious mind perfectly.
