About this deal

The narrative is passionate and authentic. I disagree with other reviewers about the writer's objective to portray himself as a good person and to put the blame on everyone else. To the contrary, he does not conceal the fact that he and his friends contributed to Dahmer's misery, and the author's shame is apparent. Newman, Andy (May 1, 2002). "Drawing Jeffrey Dahmer". Boston City Paper. Boston, Massachusetts. Archived from the original on April 6, 2012 . Retrieved May 21, 2017. Neil: Dunno. It's so weird. I didn't really know her well, but she didn't act suicidal. She was cute...Nice bod. But to off yourself! I just don't get that! I mean, at our age...how bad can life be? Although the author mentions he researched the case of Dahmer, this book focuses on Dahmer's teenage years in high school. I'll explain why I felt like the author tried to milk knowing Dahmer and writing a book about his "friendship" with him. This is only my impression, and I may be way off base.

Irony: A lesson of sorts in not judging books by their covers; Lloyd Figg makes a big show of being a huge psycho edgelord while Jeff looks relatively normal and well-behaved (even Derf in the lunchroom lampshades ◊ this when Figg's having a meltdown) in comparison... but it is the latter who becomes a genuine Serial Killer. Jeff was all set on the jogger who ran past his house being his first victim, but on the day he waited for him, he didn't jog by, unknowingly sparing himself from being the first of many victims. Derf couldn't remember what the walls, carpets, and furnishings in the Dahmer house looked like, so everything inside is based on the general fashions of the time period. This is an intimate portrait of a serial killer's childhood experiences. It is not a complete biography but a glimpse into one person's experience and his understanding of how an awkward classmate developed into one of the most renowned serial killers in the world. There Are No Therapists: There certainly wasn't any kind of professional attention towards Jeff, as Derf repeatedly points out. Derf speculates that the Dahmer family didn't consider getting Jeff help, since his mother had previously sought mental care herself with little results.

EDIT: I had to update the review to include that Jeff Dahmer was a serial killer, a friend of mine - The original self-published comic book was adapted and staged as a one-act play by the NYU Theater Department. Downer Ending: Dahmer becomes a Serial Killer, and the reader is left with the impression that his murders could have been prevented. Derf cites Spain Rodriguez, Mad magazine and Lynda Barry as important influences on his art style. He also credits Expressionism as the inspiration for his usage of heavy ink, but feels the major influence on his work is the imagery of punk. [5] In 2012, Publishers Weekly named My Friend Dahmer in their list of the year's top five comics; [16] Lev Grossman, book critic for Time, named it one of his top five nonfiction books of the year; [7] and The A.V. Club named it the year's best nonfiction book. [17] Awards for My Friend Dahmer Year

Instead, what was more infuriating is this is essentially a tale of some nondescript dudes who are amused by a peer's offbeat behavior in high school. Bizarre, I know. But this friendship (if you can call it that, and I wouldn't if you're concerned with accuracy) is a purely superficial distraction infusing the story with absolutely nothing of substance. urn:lcp:myfrienddahmergr0000derf_l4o6:epub:23cb1b04-ead0-427f-b3b8-f70e8c58e2e7 Foldoutcount 0 Identifier myfrienddahmergr0000derf_l4o6 Identifier-ark ark:/13960/t2m723m88 Invoice 1652 Isbn 9781419702167 Lccn 2011285306 Ocr tesseract 5.0.0-alpha-20201231-10-g1236 Ocr_detected_lang en Ocr_detected_lang_conf 1.0000 Ocr_detected_script Cyrillic Ocr_detected_script_conf 0.5009 Ocr_module_version 0.0.13 Ocr_parameters -l eng Old_pallet IA12451 Openlibrary_edition

Art Evolution: The artwork from Derf's original 2002 one-shot comic is very scraggly while artwork in the graphic novel version, published ten years later, is much more streamlined. Compare this panel from the original work and this panel ◊ from the graphic novel. The book covers Dahmer and Derf’s last years of high school in bucolic Bath, Ohio, one of the safest neighborhoods in the state. And by the end of the summer following their senior year, both have discovered their passion — Derf has become a fledgling artist, Dahmer a practicing psychopath and murderer. Drawn in high-def contrast, with his slightly-grotesque portrayal of the human form, this book serves as the universal countering force of Dahmer’s own dark obsession. The art’s creation only made possible as a result of the acts it chronicles and the effect it had on the artist.
