About this deal

If it’s a clear night, you could take a look at the night sky and ask your little one if they think they can see Pet Star? If you can, wave hello to him!

Take a photo of your pet's face. For the best results, take a photo of your pet with your dog or cat facing forward with his/her eyes open and mouth closed. We're giving copies of My Pet Star by Corrinne Averiss and Rosalind Beardshaw to families across the country through food banks, refuges and more - and we want you to join in the fun of the book! It’s time to get your cookie cutters ready! Cut out your shapes from the rolled-out dough. Then carefully lift them from the surface using a spatula and place them on the baking tray. Here's how you can make your very own suncatcher to help brighten up your windows and make stars that will sparkle in the daylight... Once you’ve finished reading the book, why not continue the story with these colourful shadow puppets and make your own adventures? Rhyming text and gentle storytelling help make this the perfect book for bedtime or snuggling up with; it feels like a really special story and is a joy to read.

If you feel like you need warming up for storytelling duties, picture books offer the simplest way: just study the illustrations together... ‘What’s this?’ ‘I wonder where she’s going?’ ‘Look at that house, what colour is the roof?’The more you do it, the better it will feel and your child is most certainly not a critic, they love the sound of your voice. Next, tear up your colourful tissue paper into lots of little squares. If you don't have coloured tissue paper, you could paint on to another sheet of baking paper or white tissue paper and use that instead. But for some parents, reading aloud causes a crisis of confidence. It might be fears about stumbling over the words or hearing your voice. We might avoid it all together or race through at such a speed just to get it over and done with. The expert advice is simple – fight your inner critic and do it anyway! As well as the story representing how well you should look after any pet, there are teaching points about the star too including how it enjoys sleeping all day as it’s time to shine is the night sky. At the beginning of the story we meet a young girl who finds something unusual on the ground. This is no sweet wrapper or loose change but something has fallen high from the sky, a star! The star we meet is grubby and dirty but that doesn’t put the girl off and she decides to take it home.

The little girl and the star forge a beautiful friendship and this will be a great book for those who love stargazing and those who are keen on having a pet. Full of warmth and heart, this read shines as brightly as the star which heals. A beautiful bedtime story that will have readers dreaming of their own pet star. Colour in your characters with paints or pencils. You could even add glitter, ribbons or pom poms if you like! My Pet Star is told in rhyme and the words are like a big, warm hug. It is a beautiful book about being kind and when the time comes, letting something go. The girl knows that the star will eventually have to return to the sky, but when it does it doesn’t disappear from her life as it shines down from the sky watching over her. As the story progresses we see how kind the young girl is. She treats the star as if it were a pet, doing all the things that one would expect and more. She cleans the star, feeds the star, reads to the star and shows so much love for her pet. A beautiful friendship is formed.I love the meaning of this book it teaches us that being kind, helping others, being a friend and giving all of our love can help others to recover and shine the brightest light. Add a fun eCard to your PetStar video to wish your friend or family member to celebrate a holiday or special occasion. Make a table that shows things that are alive, were alive or have never been alive. You could use this resource to help.

When a young girl finds a star under a tree, she knows it does not belong there. So she takes him home to look after, her own pet star. As the star regains its health and sparkle, it will soon be ready to return to the sky and the girl will eventually have to let go… Finally, the current Covid-19 situation can’t go without a mention. Every parent and carer is doing the most phenomenal job to keep their children feeling safe, loved and to whatever extent, entertained and stimulated. This activity would be a lovely way of completing some bookish play after reading My Pet Star and my girls looks forward to making more stars. Find out about the history of books. When were they first made? How has the production process changed?Curiosity about the images and working it out as team has so many special bonding benefits. I always find Rosalind Beardshaw’s illustrations offer lots of rich details to explore. Here are a few extra little hints and tips for reading My Pet Star aloud If you’re reading this, it won’t be the first time you’ve heard that reading aloud to your child is one of the best things you can do to help improve their language, literacy and emotional development. Welcome to my latest blog post. This piece is part of a blog tour for a brilliant picture book My Pet Star . Thank you to Hachette publishers for inviting me along. If you can, sneak a little look at it first without your child so you can familiarise yourself with the story and rhythm.
