Dr. Osborne: And don’t use your age as an excuse to not exercise or not be moving and to don’t ever overeat. Stay away from the buffets and the glutinous, you know, food celebrations that so many people want to put on and, and eat less as opposed to eating more. Of course there are many other problems.....and this is just by avoiding gluten (so wheat, barley and rye). I let you imagine how your life will be by avoiding all the foods the author say you should avoid. So if we’re really talking about are these things nourishing, is that fiber nourishing? No, it’s not really nourishing. It’s counter-nourishing. Plus it shuts down our pancreas. Plus it causes digestive problems. Then if we look at some of the other ways and the way grain and legumes are farmed, most of them contain very high levels of molds and mycotoxins. Now our body has to deal and metabolize mycotoxins, which it doesn’t do very well for most people. They don’t do very well. Especially patients who are already in chronic pain. That’s one of the reasons they are in this scenario is they’ve been eating this staple food that’s full of mycotoxin and mold and they don’t metabolize those things very well so it creates an inflammatory response. Reena Jadhav: which is yet another huge crisis in this country. So on the chapter about what to eat and what not to eat. Um, Dr. Osborne, my god. So you can eat grains, you can give us a full list of what we can eat.

No Grain, No Pain: A 30-Day Diet for Eliminating Root Cause No Grain, No Pain: A 30-Day Diet for Eliminating Root Cause

The truth is, those with chronic pain live shorter lives. Autoimmune sufferers have life expediencies that are about 26 years shorter than those without them. The traditional answer for these diseases is pain and immune suppressing drugs whose side effects are worse than the diseases themselves. It is time to stop the madness. We’ve been kind of mislead as a population in the US. The government has stepped in and created a food guide pyramid that has really been quite misleading. The origination of the food guide pyramid was not necessarily to be used as a guideline in medical schools or in nutritional schools to teach physicians or nutritionists how to recognize healthy and non healthy nutrition. It was created as a tool to promote USDA, the United States Department of Agriculture. Dr. Osborne: So I want, I want the listening audience to expand your minds of possibility here. Meats, fruits, vegetables, nuts, even some small quantities of seeds, depending on the status of your gut are all acceptable. If we add all those different options that we’re looking at, well over 300 different options. If we’re talking about what’s commercially available in most grocery stores. The fact of the matter though is most people eat less than 10 fruits and vegetables. In essence, their diets are so restrictive in that way and they just haven’t expanded their mind. And there’s a learning curve with this. Part of that learning curve is what do I do with green chart? What do I do with rainbow chard? What do I do with a turnip, right? Because people just don’t cook with them so they don’t know how to cook with them or preparing them to where they’ll taste well or taste good. Reena Jadhav: Hi everyone. It’s Reena Jadhav here with healthbootcamps and today we are here with Dr Peter Osborne Doing the book masterclass on his book, which I read, which was instrumental in my healing, no grain, no pain, and it’s the 31 day program for eliminating the root cause of chronic pain. Dr Osborne. Welcome. It only goes to make scientific sense. We’ve studied it. We know this happens, but if we’re just thinking about this theoretically even. Every species has the ability to protect itself from predators or becomes extinct. So we look at grains in general. We look as legumes in general. They contain lectins and phytates and oxalates and other proteins like A Ti’s [inaudible 00:18:45] and inhibitors. These are proteins that shut down out pancreatic digestion. They shut down our ability to produce enzymes because these things don’t want to be digested by us. Then we also have food as a whole. Yeah, food provides micro-nutrients but some people are allergic to the food that they eat and the foods they’re eating are creating an inflammatory response that’s leading to chronic inflammation and pain. Probably the most well-studied and the most well-talked about to date is gluten. Gluten sensitivity is being a trigger for autoimmune pain. I say that as a non celiac (but with gluten sensitivity proved by CyrexLabs Test). I'd rather live with some joint pain and brain fog (which btw both improved a lot by stop eating gluten) than give up all the foods the author says and basically become a shut in prisoner (actually a depressed prisoner). Sure. I wrote, “No Grain, No Pain”. It’s a 30-day diet. Although, we say a 30-day diet; it really needs to be longer than that to keep the pain at bay. But a 30-day diet for eliminating the root cause of chronic pain. I have been searching for years for the reason that my celiac disease can not get under control. On Jan 20 i opened a newsletter from Dr Osborne and read it and bought this book. I read it that night, the entire time saying YES This is Me ...Yes i have that. I decided the next day to go for it and change my life eating habits. IT was not much of a change since i was already most of the way there.

Dr. Osborne: And um, you know, one of my first patients was a little girl and I wrote about her in the book and her name was ginger. She’s nine years old. She comes to me, I’m like the ninth doctor, she’s got a terminal diagnosis of juvenile juvenile rheumatoid arthritis. So, you know, her mom has literally been told by the rheumatologists, go home and get ready for your daughter’s funeral. Do you imagine that? Right. And so what makes me so mad is that I wasn’t the first doctor. I was, that I was the last doctor in this chain of many, many doctors over many, many years because this little girl had this disease from early on. That’s what juvenile onset means. And so her knees were the size of softballs and she was a tiny little thing. She couldn’t get around as a child. She couldn’t crawl, she couldn’t go to the playground and play. It is estimated that autoimmune pain affects 46 million Americans. For chronic pain the numbers are even higher. If you have been diagnosed with an autoimmune disease like Hashimoto’s thyroiditis, rheumatoid arthritis, migraine headaches, fibromyalgia, or celiac disease, this book is for you. If you suffer with inflammatory skin or bowel diseases, this book is for you. If your doctor has prescribed you fistfuls of medicine with no end in sight, this book is for you. So now obviously the book is sitting on your shelf there. It looks really good. So when you talk about no grain, are you really talking about taking gluten out of your diet or are you talking about all grains and all forms? At what point do you just throw your hands up and say eff it and dive into a big bowl of pasta? If I’m gonna be in pain, I may as well live my life.Dr. Osborne has served as the executive director and the vice president of the American Clinical Board of Nutrition and is on the advisory board for Functional Medicine University. Dr. Osborne: It hurts into. Well, this is actually a very, very common manifestation of chronic anemia. Dr. Osborne: If I run this test and it’s negative now what now you really don’t have leaky gut or do you have leaky gut? So there there are different kinds of sugar absorption tests that we can run their protein antibody tests that we can run, but ultimately we want to know really, and that part of what I talk about in the book is the 11 different causes of leaky gut. So to me it’s more important that a person who understands these are the things that cause leaky gut. So no matter who you are, if you’re controlling these 11 factors, then you don’t have to worry so much about the prolong leaky gut, creating the problem and you can actually seal the gut lining and heal. Yeah, I think the last big study that was done on this topic … It was an average of less than seven hours of nutritional training for the average physician in the country, in the U.S. By comparison, you take a doctor who’s trained in functional medicine, most of them have anywhere from two to four years of additional training. Me personally, I have well over 10 thousand hours of additional training post-graduate in nutrition and functional medicine.

Dr. Osborne: Gosh, I like meat. I mean, um, I, you know, I like meat cause most people, let me rephrase, not most, but a lot of the people that I see when they come in, they are in a state of chronic catabolic breakdown their bodies how are eating into their own muscle tissue to try to fight the war against the food that they’re eating. Dr. Fasano, considered the biggest name of celiac diseases talks here about celiac and gluten sensitivity, which he admits lately is a But here I am, five years later, and I still have more bad days than good days. I’ve dropped gluten. I’ve dropped soy. I’ve dropped 99% of dairy. What the hell else can I do, you know? A man’s gotta eat. Do I stop having my morning fix (coffee…not drugs)? Do I stop imbibing in the pleasure of an alcoholic beverage (or two…three…)? I mean, that’s not to say all opioids are evil or bad. I want to be very clear. I’m not anti-drug. I’m anti-drug abuse. I’m anti using the drug in the wrong scenario for the wrong length of time. Awesome. So you wrote a whole book on this topic, and the name of the book is … You want to tell everyone what the name of the book is?I think the biggest thing is just look at where you’re at. If you suffer with chronic pain apply those four things. Really, if you just apply those four things you will feel better, guaranteed you will feel better. I’ve never met a person, fifteen years of clinical practice treating over five thousand patients, I’ve never met a person who didn’t apply things didn’t feel better. Even if we didn’t give any drugs. Even if we didn’t give any supplements. For example it's tough to justify to your romantic partner such a strict diet, it's a big "hassle" for them. Not being able to ever go to restaurants, not going to friends inviting you over for dinner, being extremely cautious when going on vacation in exotic places because you don't know if they have gluten free foods ecc.... I think the glycemic index or the glycemic part is really important too. The patients I see, some of their diet is upwards of seventy-five percent grain basically. Maybe there’s some protein thrown in there. YOU MUST eliminate all grains, all grain relatives, pseudo grains and related products such as corn and soy, eliminated GMOs, antibiotic/hormone products.

This has all been pretty well documented. It’s not a great mystery. I think it’s just a great mystery for the average person. Then again we’ve got micro-nutrition, we’ve got infection, we’ve got food. And then the last fundamental that I see very frequently is environmental chemical exposures. And so this could be heavy metals like lead or arsenic or mercury or cadmium. This could be other things as well like mold. Environmental molds and mycotoxins. So you literally have to rot it an predigest it before you can eat it, otherwise it plays havoc on your digestive tract. Corn does the same thing. The Hispanic population, the reason they eat corn and their historical method of preparation is to crush the corn on limestone because limestone can an ingredient in it that breaks down the very very difficult to digest proteins within the corn. I mean, there’s all these different methods and ways that we have, as cultures, as society, created to be able to digest these foods that are traditionally extremely hard to digest and cause a lot of problems, but because we use these foods to feed hundreds of millions of people we’ve kind of scaled the production of these foods and those ancient preparation methods are no longer in use. They are no longer being used. So now what we get is we get corn that’s not ground by limestone. We get grains that aren’t being fermented or sprouted. Even if we were sprouting them, I still don’t recommend eating them because at the end of the day all those things I just said are still true.
