About this deal

Multiple trips in Dartmoor and Snowdonia National Park which are known for their windiness, as well as the South West Coast Path and the odd garden camp during the COVID-19 pandemic. OEX tents have been built to withstand the trials of outdoor adventures and expeditions. They use 7075 lightweight aluminium poles, with durable poly flysheets that won't falter in arduous conditions, and will give you years of service. The flysheet is very waterproof (rated to 5000mm) with a fire-retardant coating which will self-extinguish if exposed to flame. This feels like a quality piece of kit and I’m still not entirely sure how they can make money selling it for just 89 quid (minus 10% forces discount). There’s a hanging point both in the inner pod and front porch for hanging lights or head torches (that’s what we did).

OEX Jackal 2 Tent (green) - Ultimate Outdoors

Its simple tunnel design, robust flysheet and groundsheet and aluminium poles make it tough enough to protect you from stormy weather. The groundsheet is pre-attached, making pitching easy and keeping insects out. The compact front porch gives you room to store your wet kit and boots. During Covid I’ve been trying to get the kids out the house as much as possible. Bike rides, walks, den building in the woods, wild swimming, we’ve done it all.I’d been using the OEX Phoxx 1 for a couple of years and was very pleased with the stability in high winds and driving rain on my wild camps. So when it came to wanting to share the experience I instantly went for the Phoxx 2 as a cheap solution for my next budget shelter. I was used to the setup which is exactly the same as the Phoxx 1, so it was a clear choice without offending the wallet. With that end being just that little bit lower, it’s a little more aerodynamic and experiences less buffeted by the wind. Also, on the aerodynamic front, the mesh pole sleeves that reduce wind resistance are a must. They lower the amount of wind resistance and tent movement often experienced on similar tents without them. If you have used this product please leave a review, or your comments for other visitors, many thanks! The front porch area has a big groundsheet that rolls out of the way when you don’t need it. However, we had lots of wet ground at our pitch so it was greatly appreciated and a very handy feature. There was plenty of room for us all and we made full use of the large front porch area to cook in.

OEX Jackal III 3 man tent review – TentLife OEX Jackal III 3 man tent review – TentLife

Being a responsible parent, I decided against christening it with two sprogs in tow, up a mountain in the middle of nowhere. If it turns out to leak badly or something is missing, a fun time wasn’t gonna he had. So we found a picturesque spot on the farm and pitched up for the night. All in all, very happy with this. Serious bargain. I think you’d struggle to find a better 3 man tent for even double what I paid for this. For a while now I’ve been thinking about getting something a bit more suited to the Cumbrian climate. The kids are old enough to start hitting the hills now and I wanted something big enough for the 3 of us (and maybe the missus if I can convince her). There is a spacious porch for cooking and admin and it has a built in groundsheet which is attached to the inner. You can roll this away if you want, but I found it really useful to have a nice dry spot for storing boots and our bag. It comes with its downsides though. It’s massive. You aren’t lugging this thing far from your car. It’s also not very waterproof at all. A recent adventure confirmed this when I awoke with the entire bottom half of my doss bag in a puddle.

Speaking of all weathers, we were hoping for snow, but on our first night, we didn’t get any. What we did get overnight was plenty of rain. It rained a little last night and we stayed perfectly dry. It was also quite windy and it felt nice and sturdy. I’d have no hesitation in taking this out on the fells. The hydrostatic head of 5000mm exceeds most other tents and puts it firmly in the same league as serious mountain tents. Of the 3 the OEX was the cheapest by quite a long way (on sale at 89 quid). It also had the most internal space and the biggest porch. Important for us as we may occasionally use it as a 4 man tent (see above regarding wife). The only criticism I have is the very reflective strip that runs around the base of the tent. It’s great for helping you find your tent, and it looks cool too, but for a stealth camper it may bother you. There are currently no images uploaded by members for this Tent. If you have a photo, be the first to upload one. The outer flysheet material is more than capable in the waterproof department. Being made from 5000HH, we were kept adequately dry from the Scottish weather. The inside is more than big enough for me and the sprogs. The missus could squeeze in too for the odd single night adventure, but it’d be a squeeze for prolonged periods. The space inside is more useable than other tents I’ve looked at as the footprint is roughly rectangular instead of coffin shaped.
