Open-fronted nest boxes should be hidden from view - attach your box to a wall or fence that has shrubs and creepers growing against it. Well a House Sparrow is happy to set up home in the busy suburbs, the Tree Sparrow requires seclusion in the woods.
If a box is not used for several years in succession it may be worth moving the box to a more suitable location. Can I look inside my nest box?Traditionally, nest boxes for small birds are put up in the spring - pairs begin to prospect in the latter half of February, so a box put up at the end of the winter stands a good chance of attracting nesting birds. However, it is never too early or late to put up a nest box, as some birds will use them to roost in during the winter months. The habitat available to you will be the primary factor determining the type of birds you can attract for nesting. Here are a few things to consider: Let the sunshine in? Not for your nester: do not place your bird box in a south-facing position . These locations make for the hottest bird boxes as it leaves them exposed to the sun. Want to attract small bird species? Try hanging your nest box in a shady spot . Blue tit babies for example, may be well able to regulate their body temperature in high temperatures, even up to 50 °C, but studies show that it comes with a cost: the effort of keeping cool is restrictive to their growth. That was Marlorie’s biggest struggle. Though she was an artist and painted her perspective on the world, she didn’t have any perspective of herself and didn’t share who SHE was with others. Therefore, what “Bird Box,” is saying is that the apocalypse comes from ourselves — from the human race. Suicide is spreading like wildfire across the globe, and if we have to have that plainly explained to us, there’s no wonder we can’t connect. We don’t look into the deeper meaning of things anymore. It’s been expressed to me that “Bird Box,” is an “okay” movie, I look at it and say, “wow,” the writer really had something important to say, which will take me to my last point. This long box should be fastened to the tree trunk with a deep shaded quiet spot, as much as 3 to 5 metres off the ground. If fixing the box inside the building it should be an old, abandoned building with enough room up in the rafters to fix the box, allowing owls to escape if need be.
Bird Box,” uniquely differs compared to other post-apocalyptic films such as, “The Quiet Place,” “It Comes at Night,” “I Am Legend,” and quite honestly, even, “Zombieland.” Within all of these films, you are introduced to the characters in a non-linear fashion, where you meet them in the post apocalyptic world. This forces you to pay attention and pose the question, “How did they get here?” and you keep watching to find out. Just as the the rest of these films, “Bird Box,” shares with you the rules of the world, such as, you’ll see them if you look into the outside world, or like in “A Quiet Place,” if you make a loud enough noise, even while you’re inside, they’ll come after you. Also, something these films have in common, besides in “I Am Legend,” is that there are other survivors with the lead character that could be either enemies or allies throughout the film. Although most birds prefer natural cavities for nesting, with the correct design a nesting box can serve as a good replacement.
Box types - hole-fronted or open-fronted
Shelter your box from the weather - the front of the nest box should be angled vertically or slightly downwards to prevent rain from entering the nest box. Make sure it is sheltered from prevailing wind, rain and strong sunlight. Instead, the Tawny Owl box should be strapped to a tree trunk that is overhanging or at least on an angle with cover to keep the wet out.
