About this deal

The sīra literature includes a variety of heterogeneous materials, containing mainly narratives of military expeditions undertaken by Muhammad and his companions. These stories are intended as historical accounts and are used for veneration. The sīra also includes a number of written documents, such as political treaties (e.g., Treaty of Hudaybiyyah or Constitution of Medina), military enlistments, assignments of officials, letters to foreign rulers, and so forth. It also records some of the speeches and sermons made by Muhammad, like his speech at the Farewell Pilgrimage. Some of the sīra accounts include verses of poetry commemorating certain events and battles. [2] The following is a list of some of the early Hadith collectors who specialized in collecting and compiling sīra and maghāzī reports: al-Usool min ‘Ilm al-Usool. This is an abridged book which serves as an introduction for the seeker of knowledge. Muhammad: Man and Prophet by Adil Salahi – This is one of my favorites and frankly the best one I like. It is also available as a free audiobook here. This was the first time when I actually “understood” the seerah and kept up with the names and dates. It is very well written and I would highly recommend it to anyone. Al-Arba’een al-Nawawiyyah, by Abu Zakariyya al-Nawawi (may Allaah have mercy on him). This is a good book because it includes etiquette and a good methodology, and important basic principles, such as the hadeeth, “Part of a person’s being a good Muslim is his leaving alone that which does not concern him.”

Subul al-Salaam Sharh Buloogh al-Maraam, by al-San’aani, and his book Jaami’ bayna al-Hadeeth wa’l-FiqhMuhammad ibn Ishaq (d. 767 or 761), another student of al-Zuhrī, who collected oral traditions that formed the basis of an important biography of the Prophet. His traditions survived through a number of sources, most notably Ibn Hisham and Ibn Jarir al-Tabari. Sirat Ibn Hisham by Ibn Hisham – This is a translation of an abridged version of one of the primary and earliest sources for the Prophet Muhammad’s (pbuh) life. Muhammad: His Life Based on the Earliest Sources by Martin Lings – This one is also available on YouTube as a free audiobook. It is a good short book and you can listen to the whole thing in 5.5 hours. It is a popular book among both Muslims and non-Muslims. However, I would highly advise to go through Sh. Hamza Yusuf’s lectures that go along with it as a supplement. Sh. Hamza explains the book in this series of lectures and provides further details missed by Lings and points out some mistakes made in the book as well. Buloogh al-Maraam, by al-Haafiz Ibn Hajar al-‘Asqallaani. This is a very useful book, especially because it mentions the narrators, and quoted the opinions of others scholars, who said whose hadeeth is saheeh and whose is da’eef, and he comments on the hadeeth to say whether they are saheeh or da’eef.

Seerah of Prophet Muhammad by Yasir Qadhi – This is perhaps the most thorough and detailed lecture series on the life of the Messenger (pbuh) done in the English language. Hardly any sīra work was compiled during the first century of Islam. However, Fred Donner points out that the earliest historical writings about the origins of Islam first emerged in AH 60–70, well within the first century of Hijra (see also List of biographies of Muhammad). Furthermore, the sources now extant, dating from the second, third, and fourth centuries AH, are mostly compilations of material derived from earlier sources. [10] [11] I really liked the numerous references as well as the lessons that are very relevant to us in the West (e.g. how Prophet lived as minority, or navigating certain issues that have parallels to us now). Upon accepting Islam, Safwan ibn Qudama(R.A.) said to Rasool Allah: 'O Messenger of Allah, I love you.'Prophet replied, 'A man is with the one he loves.'" (Tirmidhi) That is why this book is the best starting point ever, not only is it entertaining and sets up characters and scenes in a similar ways to classic novels, it is also lays a great foundation in learning the seerah. This book managed to fill in all the voids the other Seerah books had. However, once finishing parts 1 and 2 of this book, I think Muslims would enjoy "The Sealed Nectar" far more as they would already have a base understanding of the seerah. It was a book that constantly forced you to engage and think about your own life which was really beautiful. A very good introduction to the Seerah. After watching some informative films, series and lectures, I really wanted to get into its reading materials. I wanted to start of with the Sealed Nectar but decided to go with this book as it is a little lighter and can potentially prepare you for the other more renowned works. Not to mention it had the endorsement of Mufti Menk. It is in that regard, that this book did a really great job and is a really good starting point for children. Hence why, owning a physical copy of this book for your household is a must. For that and also the author explicitly has asked to not make PDF copies for distribution, which we as muslims should honour. He has also discussed the prevalent Economic systems of the modern world, analysed them to the Economic system of Islam. M. R. Ahmad (1992). Al-sīra al-nabawiyya fī ḍawʾ al-maṣādir al-aṣliyya: dirāsa taḥlīliyya (1sted.). Riyadh: King Saud University.

Top Five English Seerah Books | The Ideal Muslim Man

Nukhbat al-Fikr by al-Haafiz Ibn Hajar al-‘Asqallaani. This is considered to be a comprehensive work. If the seeker of knowledge understands it completely then he will have no need of many other books of mustalah (the science of hadeeth). Ibn Hajar (may Allaah have mercy on him) has a useful way of writing, which involves examining every issue in depth and categorizing the topics he discusses. If the seeker of knowledge reads it he will find it stimulating, because it is based on making one think. I say: it is good for the seeker of knowledge to memorize it because it is a useful summary of the science of mustalah (science of hadeeth). These two books are more comprehensive than al-Waasitiyyah. These three books were written by Shaykh al-Islam Ibn Taymiyah. These are the 2 eternal sources of guidance for men and women in their struggles to achieve perfection in their moral, spiritual and social areas of life. Al-Durar al-Saniyyah fi’l-Ajoobah al-Najdiyyah, compiled by Shaykh ‘Abd al-Rahmaan ibn Qaasim (may Allaah have mercy on him) I also feel like the footnotes were done very well and succinctly in explaining issues such as age of Ayesha, slavery and plagues (and its link to Covid). No one must ever let power or social, economic, or political interest turn him or her away from other human beings, from the attention they deserve and the respect they are entitled to. Nothing must ever lead to a person to compromise this principle or faith in favor of a political strategy aimed at saving or protecting a community from some peril. The freely offered, sincere heart of a poor, powerless individual is worth a thousand times more in the sight of God than the assiduously courted, self-interested heart of a rich one.”

The Simple Seerah | The Seerah in a language you understand

In the Arabic language the word sīra or sīrat ( Arabic: سيرة) comes from the verb sāra, which means to travel or to be on a journey. A person's sīra is that person's journey through life, or biography, encompassing their birth, events in their life, manners and characteristics, and their death. In modern usage it may also refer to a person's resume. It is sometimes written as "seera", "sirah" or "sirat", all meaning "life" or "journey". In Islamic literature, the plural form, siyar, could also refer to the rules of war and dealing with non-Muslims. [2] Sīrat rasūl allāh [ edit ] Wahb ibn Munabbih (d. during 725 to 737). Several books were ascribed to him but none of them are now extant. Some of his works survive as quotations found in works by Ibn Ishaq, Ibn Hisham, Ibn Jarir al-Tabari, and Abū Nuʿaym al-Iṣfahānī. A good read for anyone who wants to learn about the seerah in an accessible, engaging and easy to imagine in the mind's eye way. Usually when I try to reach Seerah books I get overwhelmed by the chunk of historic information of the Arab world, culture and societal norms prior to the birth of the Prophet. Thinking from the perspective of a young person over the age of 10, I believe this is one of the reason why young people (and adults) aren’t able to engage with mainstream Seerah books. This book is aproachable - it speaks in a language and style that we are familiar with, and we don’t need to have extensive knowledge to be able to grasp the contents! Rawdat al-‘Uqalaa’ by Ibn Hibbaan al-Busti (may Allaah have mercy on him). This is a useful book despite its brevity. He compiled a large amount of useful material and stories of the scholars, muhadditheen and others. Ye have indeed in the Apostle of Allah a beautiful pattern of (conduct) for anyone whose hope is in Allah and the Final Day and who engages much in the praise of Allah. (Al-Ahzab)
