About this deal

Many thanks so Zephyr Books and NetGalley for an advanced copy of Skin Taker by Michelle Paver in exchange for an honest review. In the Candle Cove novels, it is revealed that before he became the Skin-Taker, he was a man named Thade Soben. During the pilot episode, he introduces himself as " the grrreatest pirate, sorrrcerer and vain villain in the worrrld", showing that he stresses his R's when speaking. Run wild with Wolf Brother in a Stone Age world we all want to be a part of with million-copy-selling author, Michelle Paver. Danger, magic and non stop adventure await Torak, Renn and Wolf. The Clans will be tested as never before, as they battle to find ways to survive and thrive in their beloved Forest. The dreadful secret that Torak carries with him at the close of SOUL EATER is revealed and he is cast out from the clans. It is his fourteenth summer. He's alone, cut off even from Wolf and Renn.

Paver powerfully presents a world view that’s magical but never primitive’ Financial Times’It transports us a long way from the here and now’ Sunday Times, Children’s Book of the Week’This book is a novel to be cherished, treasured and loved by every young generation to come’ LoveReading4Kids Along with their friends, Wolf and Dark, they are faced with danger and obstacles at every turn, from wild animals to an evil entity from their past. Their task seems impossible but can they use their skills and magical abilities to work together to save the world and all the clans within it. Skin Taker by Michelle Paver is the latest in the Chronicles of Ancient Darkness series, which follows Torak, a spirit Walker, Renn, his mate and Wolf, his trusty companion, as their livelihood is threatened by an unnatural force in this tense, new wild adventure. Still on bears, the episode when Torak bumps into a bear on a foggy river is based on the experience of an intrepid young Norwegian hiker whom I met on a trip to Malangenfjord in 2015. The same young woman also told me of a separate incident when she’d scared off a bear from entering her tent with a puff of pepper spray; I substituted earthblood when this happens to Dark.

The story itself is sound, do I do think it's missing something that the previous books did have. I only can't quite figure out what that is. I do know, however, that I think it's a bit cheap - if that's the right word - of partially re-using some ideas that were present in Book 5 - Oathbreaker. The Deep Forest, how the clans there act, the idea of war, Gaup's presence... Okay, it may be realistic, and the way she writes it and everything certainly is realistic as well, but it just looks as if she's written the same book twice with some changes. The two bases of the book - the meteorite and Naiginn - are good, though. The themes in the book of community, friendship, kindness and respect for the natural world seem to be more important now than ever. It feels like a very important story considering the current climate and I wondered if you had any hopes for what your readers might take away from the book?

This is a first rate magical, action/ adventure for older children and younger teens, but I would recommend reading the earlier books in the series first (as I’m looking forward to doing). Eyewitness accounts of a meteorite in 1908 that blasted a remote Siberian region provided colour, although wherever possible Paver brings her writing to life from events she has experienced. These range from the tantalising to the terrifying: she has swum with killer whales beyond the Arctic Circle, explored ice caves under Alaskan glaciers and faced a mother bear with two cubs on a remote trail in southern California. “I was utterly terrified,” she says of the last of these. “She was very defensive and came towards me, clashing her jaws together.” Such an excellent book set in the stone age! My favourite character is Torak because he seems so mysterious' - Toppsta

Can easily be read as a standalone novel, so skilful is the storytelling... Paver powerfully presents a world view that's magical but never primitive' Financial Times A transcript of the third round of the fourth version of the Fandom Games roleplay on Tumblr. May 2021. Series In " The New Ship", Poppy relives his memories of his first interaction with the Skin-Taker. Wearing a mask, Poppy tied the Skin-Taker to a chair and removed his skin, to avenge all those who had been skinned and killed by him. Although Poppy meant to kill him, the Skin-Taker is an Abyssian and cannot die, so he continued living as a skeleton. It is mentioned that Poppy does not know if the Skin-Taker is aware it was him who skinned him.

Like the previous books in the series, Skin Taker takes place in northern Scandinavia, so the wildlife is appropriate to the region – as are the seasonal changes in the hours of daylight. However I’ve changed mountains, rivers and coastlines to suit the stories, which means that you won’t find the specific features of Torak’s world in a modern atlas.

Hello Yellow - 80 Books to Help Children Nurture Good Mental Health and Support With Anxiety and Wellbeing - I am a massive fan of the Chronicles of Ancient Darkness and have been since 2009, so I’m sure you can understand my excitement when this new continuation trilogy was announced. However, this excitement also came along with a small amount of hesitation, would I be disappointed with the next books to come? Would Paver be able to recreate the magic of the original series? So far, I have had no need to doubt. This is not intended to be a full statement of all your rights under the Distance Selling Regulations. The joys include being reunited with Torak, Renn and Wolf – as well as other favourite characters such as Fin-Kedinn, Dark and the Walker. I also love evoking the Forest, the Sea, and all the many creatures whom my characters encounter in their adventures, as well as introducing the reader to new clans. The challenges include how to keep each new story vivid and exciting, without repeating what has gone before – AND how to ensure that each new story appeals both to fans of the series, and to readers who are new to the WOLF BROTHER books, and want a standalone story. Assorted other narratives present The Skin Taker as a foreboding sign of what is to come. The protagonist of "Candle Cove: Day of the Dead" recalls how her son received a macabre statuette of The Skin Taker playing a piano not long before he was murdered by a man for playing the Candle Cove theme. Thousands of years ago an orphan boy and his wolf cub companion challenge a demon bear that threatens to destroy their world forever. With the help of the World Spirit, Torak destroys the bear, but his beloved Wolf is lost in the ensuing avalanche. Of course, in the original creepypasta, Candle Cove was revealed to be of dubious existence given how everyone who remembered it was actually watching static. However, this greatly emphasizes The Skin Taker's sinister qualities, as well as the rest of the show.
