About this deal

I don’t know why but my initial feelings I had towards Derek’s character was not hate but curiosity. I want to know why he’s involved in his sister’s rape. And when I found out about it, bes, I almost hurl my phone. I was that triggered. I understood Ashley’s rage towards him then. I really don't know where to start with this review, I mean I thought the book was fabulous, and I heartily recommend it to everyone but I can't quite get to grips with my thoughts past that. Leah was such an amazing and complex character and Theo and George - well I’ve never loved two guys so much at the same in a book as I did these two!

I'm going to end here with a quote from Elie Wiesel. I do believe that it applies here. If we don't stand up and start believing women who say they've been raped, then this isn't going to change.

There’s no point in keeping it a secret otherwise colleagues will only make up their own stories of why you’re struggling and may be less supportive. No one should be ashamed of having dementia – it’s a complex brain disease so why on earth should we be ashamed?

It’s been the same with every headline about dementia since I was diagnosed. I’d read one after another, my heart lifting at the thought of the miracle cure that most newspapers suggested might be on the horizon. Leah's family fostered children when she was growing up. George was one of the troubled foster children they took in. Leah and George formed a special friendship, along with another boy from school, Theo. The story of these children have many heartbreaking moments, and circumstances, but yet they are shown so much love too. I loved how there are people like Leah's parents that are there to help. Derek was obviously the character on a journey from complicit to champion. The dialogue around his education seemed more like the writer attempting to educate readers poorly disguised as plots. A beautiful story about love and family and healing broken hearts. It swept me up and wouldn’t let me go – I loved it’ BETH O’LEARYI’d recently become a Dementia Friends Champion, and one day the ideal screensaver appeared on everyone's screen. It was all about Dementia Awareness. Obviously, this was relating to patients but gave me the ideal opportunity to deliver a Dementia Friends session to the whole team. It became apparent that my team at work would soon realise things weren’t right. I couldn’t hide it much longer. I had to tell them, but how? I was so disappointed with the execution of this wonderful plot premise. I don’t blame Blount for wanting to write a teachable story on these important issues. I respect her for it and wish an editor had toned down the preaching. SOMEONE I USED TO KNOW could and should have been a five star review for me. I remember feeling nervous. I remember the small room filled with all eyes on me. I remember feeling hot and uncomfortable. But I started off with the Bingo session to relax everyone and laughter and the need to win overtook any concerns they had when they walked in. this book shows the life "after" and really highlights on how we can do so much MORE to educate and prevent rape culture
